Random memories from childhood. Can you remember things from your childhood days?

I was just typing the word "than" (it may have been in a response to @LadyDuck) when I "flashed" on my thought processes when I learned the distinction between "then" and "than." In my memory, I can "feel" California in the background, so it has to have been before we moved to Chicago when I was eight. Due to "spreading activation," I now also remember that I had a tiny F-4 Phantom that I flew around the hallways in second grade. I put it away during class time, so the teacher never took it away from me. Hah! Now I remember that I finished "second" in a second grade "spelling bee." The winner was my "girlfriend," Laura Klein, so I didn't mind losing. The word that got me? "Hoe." Can you remember random stuff from relatively early childhood days? For some reason, I've always been able to.

Isn't it interesting how when you remember one thing, you start to remembers others from the same time period?

@arunima25 It can feel like a "different life." But I remember that who I am is a summary of who I have been.

@TheHorse Yes, it happens like a relay of memories. Now, so much have changed that most of them seem so distant as if it was from some previous birth

@TheHorse Sorry you lost you Mom so early. What happened? Do you remember her? As a parent that's something you always fear - after something happening to them of course - that you will die and they won't remember you. I find myself thinking that at least if I die now, hopefully they will have lots of memories.

@Fleura Cancer. I remember her, but not that well. My dad was the more "active" parent.

That's Horse Jr. and another neighbor kid 10 years ago. So you can see me (who took the photo) in their eyes.

I got 3rd in a spelling bee in 6th grade . . . but everyone was expecting for me to win . I messed up on the word "aluminum" (I had to look that up now to make sure it was spelled right ).

@TheHorse I thought I had all the words down pact - guess not. I messed up "aluminum" thinking there was a silent m or n somewhere . . . not sure why.

I almost looked up "hoe" to make sure I got it right. I struggled with "restaurant" until my Graduate School days. I think I can handle "aluminum."

Is that a picture of you and Laura? Both were adorable. I have a few memories but with all the moving we did it became fairly traumatic so I don't remember as much as I'd like to. Army brats in the 1950s seemed to be uprooted from school during January and all too often many of us had to take a school year over once they settled into the new base their dads were assigned to.

Yes I remember random things from my childhood. One thing I remember clearly is falling off the jungle gym in kindergarten and noticing how I got blisters on the palm of my hands.

Yes! I can remember lots of things and the memories are earlier than I thought. I can remember going to my parents' bedroom in the mornings; I thought I must have been about 4 but I now know I was probably only two because I remember wearing the yellow pyjamas with blue teddy bears on them and my Mum kept all those things and my girls wore them and that's when I realised how small I must have been. Likewise I can remember walking (toddling I suppose) round and round my Dad's leg (round one leg so between his legs) and again, having seen how tall my girls were at what ages I now realise I was younger than I thought I must have been. I can remember going to Playgroup, and that was before I started school which was when I was four and a half. I also remember two friends I had from there, Miranda and Fey - they lived not far from us and I remember visiting their home but then they moved away. I remember going to visit my great-aunt and uncle, they lived a mile from us and on gloomy days I can remember getting cosy in the pushchair with the rain-cover over it while my Mum pushed me there through the lanes. I must have been quite small to be able to do that without my legs dangling out! My Mum used to take me to chapel every Sunday and to keep me quiet during the sermon she used to take some old plastic hair curlers which were different pastel colours and I remember playing with those, putting them on her fingers and pulling them off again. (When I was older I used to take my farm animals to play with on the little shelf where the hymn books go). I could go on, lots of memories. My Dad though reckoned he could remember being born, so I'm not as good as him! But in contrast my partner can hardly remember anything of his childhood!

Definitely, I have lots of various memories that pop up now and then and particularly when I am looking at old photos. It is just; the everyday stuff from childhood that I sometimes cannot remember. For instance, I can remember things from Christmas but cannot recall how my parents and I sat down to eat Christmas dinner and what mom served.
