Street art in Collingwood, Melbourne, Australia

Our son lives in Collingwood, an inner suburb of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. It was once one of the less affluent suburbs but, being so close to the city centre, it is now quite a trendy place to live and is gaining a name for the ‘street art’ which now covers many of the once-bare walls of buildings. The art in the photo is just around the corner from our son’s house. I don’t know that the people are individuals but I guess they represent the multi-cultural nature of the area. We were really impressed with these.

Some are now commissioned by local councils. He would have had to have scaffolding or somesuch.

Great art but I do find it kind of sad that I don't see a native Australian face represented there.

@JudyEv I think you're right. I guess perhaps they don't make others feel guilty because they were made more welcome?

@Fleura Many indigenous are doing really well and doing their best to help their fellow people. The indigenous are over-represented in our gaols but if they're doing the crime, what can you do about it? It's a real problem. Once, money was given to them or housing built etc and it all went to waste, but there is now much more consultation with the groups themselves which is helping.

Good point. I sometimes think dark-skinned immigrants are more 'acceptable' in our society than our own indigenous people.

It's impressive that they used the entire building as their canvas to display their artistic talent. It was neatly finished and appealing to the eye. Additionally, the message it sends is powerful and demonstrates how multicultural your area is.

Even with scaffolding it makes me wonder just how the artist could tell what he was drawing/painting.

@rebelann I think they have a small drawing on a sort of graph and they have a graph on the wall so they can tell what they're doing. I'm not sure that makes sense.

@cool83 I don't think they are anyone special. Perhaps they are modelled on someone or the artist has just come up with these faces.
