Happy 2023 to everyone! I pray happiness, health, and many blessings to you this year. The one thing I can guarantee you for the first month of the new year is this countdown of songs that were nominated for the “Best Original Song” Academy Award through the years. Let’s start off with a winner! Arthur’s Theme (Best That You Can Do) - Christopher Cross And here we have the first of ten Oscar-winning songs that’ll be featured this month. (The other 21 were nominated but didn’t win.) I know it’s sappy, but it’s true! I love this song. And I love this movie. It was one of my mom’s favorite films, too. In addition to the Best Original Song, Sir John Gielgud won the Best Supporting Actor award for his splendid work as Arthur’s butler/confidant/best friend, Hobson. Sad at times, but generally hilarious, Arthur was Dudley Moore’s great tour-de-force. And this song was basically the end of Christopher Cross’s meteoric rise to fame, following all of his Grammys for his debut album in 1980. Arthur’s Theme (Best That You Can Do) Written by Christopher Cross, Burt Bacharach, Carol Bayer Sager, and Peter Allen Recorded by Christopher Cross Oscar Winner From Arthur, 1981 If you get caught between the moon and New York City:

I think I know the song better than I know the movie! Did you know they remade it recently with Russell Brand in the starring role?
Arthur: Directed by Jason Winer. With Russell Brand, Helen Mirren, Greta Gerwig, Jennifer Garner. A drunken playboy stands to lose a wealthy inheritance when he falls for a woman his family doesn't like.

@spiderdust — I worked with a woman who had that problem with Orlando Bloom. That conned her into suffering through the movie Elizabethtown.

@FourWalls I haven't seen it myself. Pretty much all any movie studio has to do in order to make me not watch their film is cast Russell Brand in it.

Liza finally tried to stop seeing if she could beat her mom’s age in getting to the grave, and yeah, it’s showing on her now.

Christopher Cross owned the Easy Listening genre in 1981. He can thank his terrific song "Sailing" for putting him on the Soft Rock map.

I am a fan of the first Arthur movie with Dudley Moore. I thought the remake with Russell Brand was awful. I also enjoy the song.

Jimmy Buffett took a slap at him one night on Letterman. It was Cross he was referring to when he said that there were “people out there doing sailing songs that look like they couldn’t tie a knot in a Hefty trash bag.” (About two minutes into this interview)

Another movie I loved Dudley in was Foul Play, which he basically stole from the stars (Chevy Chase and Goldie Hawn).
