Only in America

Most of you who know me here on myLot know that I spend a lot of time at Disney World in Orlando, Florida. I call it my second home, or my home away from home. And although Disney is my favorite theme park, Orlando is home to many other theme park experiences, and is considered one of the top tourist destinations in the United States. Besides the four Disney World theme parks, Orlando is also home to Universal Studios, Universal Islands of Adventure, Universal Epic Universe, Volcano Bay Waterpark, Sea World, Aquatica, Fun Zone, Bible Land and a whole lot more. And now, apparently one more interesting attraction. On the short hour and a half drive from my home to Orlando, we pass many billboards advertising all there is to do in the Orlando area. I mostly never pay attention to them, but on my most recent drive to Disney I noticed a plethora of billboards promoting what could arguably be described as the most American thing there is. This new attraction is called Machine Gun America, where you can go and shoot dozens of different kinds of weapons, including automatic weapons and military grade weapons. All just for fun. Geez, what could be more American than that? The only thing missing from this attraction is beer and explosives. Add those things in and well...you have a typical 4th of July holiday! LOL I'm not sure how I feel about this attraction. As a responsible gun owner myself, I think it is kind of cool that you can go somewhere and test fire other types of weapons. But on the flip side, do we really need to give more people training and experience and opportunities to shoot more weapons? Especially heavy firepower? I almost wish they had a disclaimer that states they would conduct a federal background check before allowing anyone shoot a weapon there. What are your thoughts? Would you visit Machine Gun America if you were in the Orlando area?

@Tina30219 I have been going to Disney World my whole life and still find new things to experience each time I am there. The whole Disney World complex (4 theme parks, 2 water parks, 1 shopping district, 2 golf courses and 28 resorts) is too big to experience just once. It takes repeated visits to explore everything they have to offer.

I will NOT go political. I used to think of Florida as the land of alligators or is it crocodiles? sea shells and such but now I don't want to go to Florida. Ever.

Florida is still a mostly decent place. We do have our share of crazies like anywhere else, but for the moment st part it’s still a good place. And we are the land of alligators, millions of them in fact.

@sallypup The only place crocodiles live in the United States is in the very southern tip of Florida, right where you leave the mainland and head into the Keys. There is a small but thriving population of Caymans (saltwater crocs native to the Caribbean) that live among the mangroves and coastal swamps south of Miami.

@moffittjc It must have been crocs that we were warned about when we visited New Orleans.

@popciclecold The other thing I was thinking, I wonder if the FBI conducts surveillance of places like that in order to watch the types of people accessing automatic weapons. It wouldn't be hard for a terrorist to act like a regular citizen and go there and learn how to accurately shoot automatic weapons, so that some day when they acquire a weapon like that they can do damage. I would hope that the FBI has a handle on things like that so they can track and follow people with bad intentions.

@moffittjc I just wait until they are trapped. Or that rare sick one that doesn't run away

@moffittjc Most we get are out of season. Allowed to kill to protect the livestock but can't take the pelts so I just have to toss them. We only kill the ones that come near the chicken coops or into our yard space. If they stay farther out I like watching them play

But if you got really good at shooting automatic weapons, you could take out all the nuisance raccoons around your property.

It's very strange but cool. I do think background checks should be done though I'm sure some won't agree.

I am not too interested in theme parks and not into shooting at all. I still would love to come see Florida, because I know it has a lot to offer.

Heh. I might visit to see what kinds of folks are there. I wonder how they secure the weapons so you can only shoot at targets.

That’s a really good question. They must have some type of security measures in place to prevent crazy people from going on a killing spree there.

It doesn't really seem a good idea to me although with police clearance it would be better. I can imagine some getting very switched on with the thought of getting their own high-powered weapon.

My husband might be interested. I think you should be 21. I don't know if requiring a background check would work with a tourist attraction that many may visit with little notice.
