We received the photo on the right of the bushfire that nearly took out our friends’ house. This is taken looking over the dam from outside the house. On the left is a photo I took from almost the same spot when we were house-sitting there. The dots on the hillside are kangaroos. The fire bombers went over the area spraying fire retardant and managed to save the house. Our friends have been without power for a few days and no doubt it will be a few more days before it is returned. This means that everything in their big chest freezer which was in the garage will probably have to be thrown out. But it is a small price to pay for their safety and for saving the house. I can’t imagine they slept much while the fire was raging so close to them. They have lost a lot of timber and bush.

The food in the freezer can be replaced and the timber and bush will regrow. I hope the wildlife there made it to the water before the fire reached them. I'm glad your friends and their house are okay.

There is a creek at the bottom of the property but that is heavily timbered too. I don't know if that burnt or not.

@JudyEv There's no way to know. At least the water won't burn... the animals could get in there or cross it to some safety.

Wild fires are so dangerous, I've seen a few smaller brush fires but nothing like this.

A LOT of bush and farmland was burnt and heaven knows how much wildlife lost their lives. There is a colony of quokkas near our friends' house.

@RubyHawk Quokkas are marsupials. Sort of little kangaroos. There are very few colonies of them left.

Although I am happy that the property was spared from the blaze, it is just too upsetting to witness the flames all around you. I wonder if the home's owners stayed behind to keep watch on it and to continue watering it to prevent a fire from spreading.

@JudyEv Yeah that is what I think so since a fire as big as that would definitely gobble up that house unless there is someone out there wetting their surrounding areas so no fire or embers will be able to burn it. I think they used the water from that pond.

They chose to stay and defend their property. They would have been keeping the surroundings as wet as possible and putting any spot fires that might have started from falling embers.

As long as they don't open the freezer, a lot of the food should still stay well frozen for several days. I hope the herbivorous animals don't starve.

People are quick to truck in hay and feed for livestock but the native animals might be having a tough time of it.

I am sure there must have been moments of helplessness where your friends are concerned when they could see those flames and could do nothing about it

I'm sure they felt close to despair many times over those few days.

So many fires lately in the news. California always has its share it seems. I am so sorry for your friends. Glad they are safe and their home too.

@CarolDM Portugal and Spain have some bad fires too from time to time. I guess most countries do but perhaps some get more 'air time' than others.

Some areas are more prone than others. We often hear about the big Californian fires.

Wow, that would have been so scary...California and the Western states seem to go through that every summer. Hopefully all the rain they are getting out there now will provide some help with this. At least they are probably replenishing the water table.

Our fires are much more intense and fierce now than they used to be. There is often nothing the home-owner can do that makes much difference. You need the big water-trucks and fire bombers (planes) nowadays.

The skies go a very eerie colour and I'm sure the noise would have been horrendous too, what with water bombers and helicopters flying around.

This looks scary. I know that it is impossible to sleep when the bush fires are so close to your home. I am glad that they had limited damages, shame for the food, but that can be replaced.

@JudyEv This is true, when the government feared power cuts because of the Russia/Ukraine war they told us not to open the freezer.

The food is nothing really and if they didn't open it at all, it would stay frozen for quite a few days.

This is so scary and so sad. I'm glad they are safe. Food can be replaced. We had a horrible fire two years ago. Out of every type of natural disaster, that is the one I fear the most.
