Back to wintry weather again.

Last month we had some unusually severe winter weather here – no snow, but much harder frosts than usual. Then that passed and we had a spell of really mild weather over Christmas, which was pleasant and made life easy but was also peculiar, being unseasonal. Plants started to grow again and the birds were singing and carrying on as if spring was just around the corner. After that we’ve had a week or so of mild but very wet weather, leading to mud everywhere and not being able to leave the house without head-to-toe waterproofs. And now we are suddenly plunged into winter again, with hard frosts sealing everything up once more. At least it makes everything nice and clean again and the clear skies mean a bit of sun today, but the variability is a bit difficult! All rights reserved. © Text and image copyright Fleur 2023.

That's a great photo. What we'd call a really hard frost.

Yes it is frozen hard at the moment, even in the daytime. I think what's shown in the photo though is a hoar frost, when water vapour in the air freezes on objects such as plants.

@Fleura Thanks for the information. I've heard of hoar frost but didn't really know how it was different.

The clean snow always makes it look cleaner.

Compared to all the mud we've had last week, it is cleaner!

Great photo! The only frost we've had so far this winter was at Christmas when temperatures plunged. Since then it's been above freezing and no snow

I can understand the difficulty with that kind of weather. You never know what to expect.

Nice photo. Our winter is far from over. A warm patch now with 60 degrees F for a few days. Cold again this weekend.

All I can say that I cannot live a place where there is winter. It is not for me.

We have had a really strange winter season this year also. More days with temperatures above freezing than below, I actually went out and bought a jacket just for this type of weather as I feel with global warming it was a necessity as I think that we will see more winters like this.

I cannot see we had yet experienced winter so far, but this morning we did. Cold, all white because of the ice. Later we had a blue sky and sun and now it's cloudy again.
