What Scared the Dogs?

It happened when I was a kid in New Mexico. We lived in a place on a road to nowhere. Our nearest neighbor was a man three miles away or so. He lived on a ranch. He also had two hunting dogs, black and tan hounds named Beauty and Bo and a horse named Jump..
One day, his dogs streaked past us and hid under our house. They yelped, cried, and trembled. We could not coax them out.
We decided to walk to his place. We just started out and found his horse galloping down the road without him. We fastened his reins to a post and gave him water.
We found our friend limping along. He said that he was out riding and suddenly felt a chill. Everything went quiet, no bird or other sounds. The dogs went running and his horse threw him off.
We never found out what really happened. What do you think? What could scare the dogs that much? Have you ever heard of anything like that before?

Sounds like an alien encounter. I was watching a show that featured a few and one of them sounded almost exactly like that, and part of it was caught on video. A marching band in Ohio was also involved.

@akalinus I had read that dogs and other animals can see many things that we can't. Probably they saw an apparition or something spooky.

That is quite a story. When dogs scare like that it must be supernatural.

@akalinus I've always heard that animals could see spirits. I believe it too.

@popciclecold They either saw something, heard something, or sensed something unusual. I believe strange things exist. Have you ever looked at some trail cam footage on youtube or other sites? People catch bizarre entities prowling around at night.

Were there mountain lions in that area? Both horses and dogs are scared of mountain lions and both will react that way if they smell/see them. (Sometimes a pair of dogs will attack a mountain lion but not often.) Even a person can sense when they're being watched and that will send chills down their spine. The commotion of the horse bucking the man off could have scared the mountain lion away.
