Lately we have enjoyed watching the Australian Open Tennis competition. The skill and endurance of these guys and ladies is just remarkable. Andy Murray, playing for Great Britain, had two matches that went over five hours duration and another that also went to five sets but I’m not sure of the length of that match. There was only a day’s break in between each match. Another two players had a rally (hitting it back and forth to one another) that went to 70 strokes. Just when you think a player can’t possibly return a stroke, he pulls one out of the hat and manages to hit the ball back to his opponent. They are up to the quarter finals now. There are no Australians left in the singles matches but there are some good younger players coming on. The photo is of an old tennis racquet press which was used to keep wooden racquets in shape.

There have been some great tussles and the crowd gets right behind the players too.

That is a very old racket Judy. I used to like watching tennis. I even played a bit years ago in England.

It was the one sport I didn't mind playing - not that I was any good at it.

I love the Grand Slam tennis tournaments on television since the athletes have to be in super physical condition to play a game of tennis for a long period of time.

We have been enjoying it as well. Never been a fan of Andy's but what a remarkable story of pure grit and determination. I admire him for that. He played well. And to think 4 years ago he retired there thinking he would never play again. I am enjoying all the young Americans. Nice to see them coming along. Looking forward to the Ben Shelton/ Tommy Paul match after the girl's match. I do miss Roger, though. Rafa certainly gave it his best try, hated to see him get injured.

I don't like Andy much either but you really had to admire his grit. He just never gave up. Ben Shelton has a great future ahead of him I think. He is only 20. I can't really see Tommy Paul being a match for Novak. Roger and Rafa were in a class of their own - total gentlemen as well as being incredible players.

They are so talented and must be super fit to play as well as they do for as long as they do.

As a former college tennis coach, I admire how hard these players work to stay in shape. Matches require lots of running, stopping and starting, and playing matches lasting hours which requires lots of conditioning. I've been checking the results online as I don't get ESPN anymore. The #1 women's player was knocked out. Many surprises with the U.S. performing really well for a change. I think Djokovic will probably win the Men's title after being banned for not getting the Covid vaccine last year. Sweet revenge if he does!

Djokovic looks set to cruise through really. The young Ben Skelton's father is a college tennis coack in Gainesville. It's certainly a tough sport if you want to be among the best.
