We're going to a sausage sizzle

Today used to be Australia Day but our First Nations people have taken issue with that which is fair enough. One of their names for it is Invasion Day, However, it is a public holiday and our lifestyle village social committee is hosting a sausage sizzle at lunchtime. We have avoided a lot of the indoor social functions as there always seemed to be a spate of covid cases after each one but this is outdoors so hopefully we’ll be safe. The authorities are not issuing covid numbers anymore but there are a lot of cases and a number of deaths. However, the sausage sizzle will be held outdoors or, if it’s really hot, in a covered area with the big doors open. A nap this afternoon might be in order, especially if I have a white wine with my sausage. Probably I should have a beer with sausage. What do you think?

What is a sausage sizzle? Is it like what we Americans call a cookout or weenie roast? Grilling sausages or frankfurters as an outdoor social event?

It sounds like something I’d get a lot of dirty looks from if I said it to the guys I play Putt Putt with.

Yes, grilling sausages in the outdoors. Probably given to us in a bun with a choice of sauces.

There’s that beautiful building again!!! There are a lot of people who don’t refer to our holiday as “Columbus Day” anymore, so I can understand where the indigenous people are coming from. You have whatever you want with your sausage!!

Near to the hall is the little country church that has been finished in the same way. They are both very attractive.

I hope you and Vince have a good time and don't catch anything. Which beverage you choose doesn't really matter. And a nap afterward is definitely called for, in my opinion.

Is a sausage sizzle basically a bbq? If it is, I am going to start calling bbqs sausage sizzle.

I guess it's a barbecue but only sausages and onions were cooked; no steaks or whatever.

@thislittlepennyearns True and just having sausages keeps it simple for the organisers.

Being outdoors I hope you don’t catch anything. I’ve always felt safer at parties outdoors rather than inside ones since Covid hit. The name Invasion day makes me kind of giggle but I’m sure it really isn’t a laughing matter whatever happened.

@JudyEv it still goes around here too but mostly light cases like a cold. There’s a little boy who was born premature who is about 6 months old now and is in the hospital with Covid. He’s been in for a month. He keeps giving his parents a scare I feel so bad for them all.

We've mostly avoided going to these sorts of outings because of covid but now we're going a bit more. Even so, there are still some in the village that have covid.

I don't think we have sausage sizzles in the US but we do have fish fries.

That sounds similar - just different meats. Just an outdoor barbecue I guess.

Is it kind of a barbeque and why only sausages?

Yes, the sausages and onions were barbecued. The funds come out of our social fund so the cost needs to be kept down. It's a simple way to enjoy each other's company.

Gorgeous building. Reminds me of mushrooms. Is there a variety of sausage that Australlia is famous for?

It sounds much safer to be outdoors. Is that the same as a barbecue with hotdogs? lol
