Today we celebrated . . .

Today we celebrated the 100th day of school. In the lower grades especially that is always made into a big deal. Often the kids are invited to come dressed how they think they will look when they are 100 AND We celebrated Kansas Day. Technically it is not until Sunday, but we do not have school on Sunday. We had a guest presenter about our state symbols . . . and she even brought a Barred Salamander which is our state Amphibian. Much easier to bring to the school than the state animal would be. Our state animal is a Buffalo--actually and American Bison. Since they weigh in at over 1000 lbs it is not likely anyone will ever bring one to visit the school. We had a presenter who helped us learn about the Santa Fe trail. . . and she kept telling us not to believe the TV and movie versions. In the US we had three kinds of trails. . . Immigrant trails like the Oregon Trail, and cattle trails like the Chisholm Trail and then finally trade or business trails like the Santa Fe Trail that carried trade goods to the South and West to tap into the exchange of goods between Mexico and the United States. I learned more American History today than I can ever remember. I may tell more facts later. The high school brought students who helped our kiddos draw Kansas Sunflowers, and our PE teacher took the kids outside to play pioneer games. The weather was absolutely gorgeous.

I’d love to hear more of those facts you learned. That all sounds like such a fun day! Our school doesn’t do the dress up like a 100 year old but other nearby schools do and I love to see the kids photos shared by their parents.

One fact is that on the trading trails the wagons were much bigger and very heavy. They did not have a driver's seat and were pulled by multiple teams of oxen. The oxen were driven by a person beside them with a whip to get attention, usually just snapped near them not on them. The drover would call out commands like Gee and Haw and Whoa and Giddyap. There are lots of places in Kansas where you can see the ruts where the wagons compacted the soil as they passed.

@GardenGerty that would be neat to see the evidence of that after so many years (the ruts).
