Another era over for our friends as life moves on

Vince finished his working life as a bursar/business manager in a school. A bursar friend retired about the same time Vince did and bought a few acres in Ferguson Valley, Western Australia, not too far from where we lived. He and his wife planted an olive grove and eventually were able to bottle some of their own olive oil. We always thought it would be very satisfying to produce something like this, doing everything from go to whoa with your own hands. His wife also became very involved in felt-making and made some very nice garments and hats. Now, however, they have had to sell their dream as the husband is increasingly frail and looking after the olive trees became too much for him. We have just finished the bottle of olive oil that they were kind enough to give us.

I would like so much to taste that olive oil, I wonder how it is the taste. We have a lot of olive oil in Italy and the taste is so different from region to region. I also like the Greek and Spanish olive oil, but not the French olive oil, that has a bitter taste.

@JudyEv The taste and also consistency can be very different. Also the colour is not the same. The olive oil produced here around the lake is pale yellow. The olive oil from the south of Italy is light green and a lot more dense.

I can't really differentiate between the different oils. I need to take more notice.

@JudyEv Ain't that the truth. God was wise to not let us know the future. That way we rely on Him.

It does indeed. And the changes are not always what we'd choose for ourselves.

Aww that is so nice you got to have a bottle. So very sad they had to sell it. Would have been nice if they could have hired someone to run it for them instead. They may have just enjoyed doing it themselves and didn’t want someone doing it for them might take the joy out of it. Felting is so neat! My daughter had me buy her a felting kit for Christmas.

I guess it might have been best just to finalise it all while they were well enough to do it.

@JudyEv A life well-lived, pursuing dreams will always be rewarding but we need to roll with the punches and accept our limitations. Bitter sweet.

It's nice that they could do what they loved for awhile . Sooner or later everything comes to an end.

The label is of the simple accommodation that they had on the property. They had a lovely view over the olive trees.

At least they had a go and made a success of it, but you're right. Old age is not for the faint-hearted as they say.

So true that "life moves on." One of my ping pong friends and an instigator of our games lost his wife a little while back. Now he is selling his home & moving to an "independent living" place where two meals per day are provided, along with no yard to keep up. He promises to keep coming back twice a week to play. I hope he does.

There is a point where, what used to be fun, becomes hard work. That really sounds a good solution for your friend. Some men have trouble looking after themselves as regards meals and yardwork can become overwhelming. Hopefully he'll continue to play for a while longer.

That is so sad when people grow old and can't do what they once did. Too bad they couldn't have hired someone to tend to the trees for them. The bottle reminds me a bit of once that I have. It is lemon infused. I almost didn't buy it, as I thought the lemon might not be right for certain dishes, but honestly, you can't tell it's in there.

What a wonderful dream to realize. Although it is sad when we have to give up our passion due to health issues, it was marvelous that after a great career he still fullfilled a dream. I hope that you can find something to do with the bottle as a memento to remember your friend's glory days.

We do not know when we too are no more able to stand on our own two feet. Life takes a turn we do not expect will happen that soon. Man proposes, but God disposes. I hope they have a meaningful life for years to come.

My mother always said that 'Man proposes but God disposes'. We are not always in control as much as we think we are.
