Cats/my cats

I feel like cats often get a bad reputation because they seem so aloof. When people think of cats they often think of animals that enjoy being by themselves and only come out to eat and go to the bathroom. As a cat owner (or so I'd like to pretend sometimes I feel like they own me) I can tell you cats can be so loving and caring. My big boy Felix is such a lover. He loves pets and cuddles. He loves when we are near him and seems to have missed us when we are gone for longer periods of time because he always comes out to greet us when we get home. His favorite place to be is by us. If he feels we are not paying attention to him he will come and lay on top of us. He has laid on my phone and laptop to get my attention. He sometimes follows me to the bathroom and will wait by it the entire time I'm in there and when I come out tries to get my attention and have me follow him so I can pay attention to him. He is the most loving cat ever. Now my kitten Rascal who is not quite a year old yet is his polar opposite. Rascal can be very sweet and loves being held especially like a baby but he's also very rambunctious and I call him our part demon kitty because he goes from sweet to pain in the butt in seconds. He is also a kitten so he still has all of that kitten energy but I feel like he is more ornery than a lot of kittens. He likes to knock over his water dish. We have literally tried about every dish known to man to keep him from knocking it over including ones that are supposed to make it difficult. I'd honestly be impressed if I weren't so annoyed. The only thing we haven't tried yet is a cat fountain which I plan on getting soon. This playful guy has tons of energy and loves to play and drive us crazy. I'm hoping he outgrows a lot of his behaviors but I don't know if he will or not. He is super hyper and super fast. I don't think I've ever met a faster cat. He loves being under blankets but I won't let him under a blanket I'm using because he attacks my legs and feet. He's like a little shark. He and Felix don't usually get along as Rascal likes to get up in Felix's business. Felix tolerates him for so long before Rascal gets on his nerves. Rascal is super friendly most of the time but he's also super playful. He will greet and play with about anyone while Felix will run whenever there's a stranger. When we got Felix he was super shy and hid for quite a while after a couple of days he learned to slowly trust us and now he always likes to be around us. Rascal has never been shy. He meowed the entire way home from the shelter and as soon as we got him home he was mayhem on four paws. I love them both but Felix is definitely my boy. He has taken to me the way he hasn't taken to the boys. He loves them and will get pets from them but he's always by me. Rascal seems to love my husband the most. For a while, he was more about me but things somehow shifted. Now he loves the boys more than me which is fine because Felix and I like to chill together. He lays on me as I watch a movie or will come lay beside me as I sleep. He's the perfect buddy. Neither of my cats are super aloof. They love us. One just prefers to play while the other prefers to cuddle but both love people it's just that Felix loves HIS people and not strangers. Rascal will be friends with whoever gives him pets or plays with him. Rascal is also part idiot in that he knocks over his water and then acts like he's dying of thirst. We have to refill his bowl several times a day. We also had to buy a mat for under it so it wouldn't soak the floor. I love dogs too but dogs require so much more work than my cats and my cats are just as sweet and just as loving they just show it in different ways. I had a dog as a kid that I loved and I miss her all the time and I can honestly say while she was an amazing dog and showed me, constant love, my cats do the same thing and are just as amazing. Cats can also do a lot of the same things as dogs it's just sometimes harder to teach them. I once had a cat who played fetch and knew how to knock on my door to get me to let him in. If he wanted food he'd knock over the trash can pull out his can from his wet food and drop it at your feet to tell you he wanted it. He was such a smart cat. Neither of my cats I have now are as smart as Leo was but they are probably sweeter. Leo could be super sweet too but not quite like my boys now and especially not like Felix.

Felix and Rascal sound like our two younger ones. Coulby is sort of a cocky little guy that thinks he can do as he pleases and we are trying to train him. Finn is his brother and he is more of an old would and is very laid back and quizzical. Dogs are easier to train that cats by quite a lot. Dogs want to please us and cats just want their own way regardless of whether it pleases us or not.

Cats are difficult to train but can be trained. When I had Leo he already knew how to do most things we didn't train him. He was just unusually smart. I'd love to train my cats but it is super difficult but doable. Cats can do a lot of the same things dogs do it just takes more work. I love both of my boys but I definitely favor Felix because he's sweeter. Your two definitely sound like my two.

I'm a cat servant from way back. Beau Teak is on my lap right now. Yes, many cats are timid with people they don't know but that's different than being aloof. I love dogs- intelligent dogs, that is, dogs that I can work with and communicate with, like my rascally Heeler, Rufus.

I love dogs too but I have a preference for cats. Felix came out just as I was beginning to reply. He loves sitting on my lap or chest as I write. Felix is definitely shy around strangers but Rascal isn't really afraid of anyone. I just know cats get a bad reputation for being uncaring but they aren't.

@sallypup Cats are amazing, aww I'm sorry to hear about your cat. Cats can be so loving and so amazing and so many people overlook them but cat owners know how amazing they are and they become part of our family.

@sissy15 Will Tweedy cat kept an eye on me. This was years ago. I had pneumonia and wasn't getting out of bed. He kept coming and peering into my face. Another time I wasn't feeling well for another reason, laid down and slept deeply. He came and yowled into my ear until I got up and found I'd left a pan burning dry on the stove. Just a couple of months ago I lost Sonny James- the kitty in my avator photo. Dang it hurts. He was my right hand.

Some cats seem to be really smart when it comes to communicating their needs.

@sissy15 Cats are very independent and people mistake their independence as aloofness. My cat when she wants her pets will come on my lap and she follows me around sometimes and calls to me when I am not in the same room as her. She is also independent and lets me kiss her head and she gives me kisses at times but not all the time. I like to talk to her because there are times she is a very good listener.

I like cats. I don't have one yet but I want to get one. My sister has a cat that she let go outside and now he doesn't come in. Not even in the winter time. He only comes to the house to eat. She said that he had brought some other cat's home and they were sharing his food then, they decided to take over. My sister does not play that. She ran those other cat's away. She said she wasn't going to let those other cat's prevent her cat from eating.

Our cats here (2) were naughty and very mischievous until the age of two. They then suddenly mellow down and sleep more than playing. (They become active again at night time.)

I hope Rascal will mellow. The cat I had before we got as a kitten and he was never like Rascal. Felix we adopted as an adult cat so I really have no clue how he was as a kitten but I can't really see him being mischievous.

@sissy15 Our male cat here is 2.5YO, even as a kitten, he already acted like an old man (until I found him doing his toilet in some different corners of the house....). He is still very affectionate, but I am very careful with him these days (in case he does it again, turn corners or areas of different rooms in the house into his new toilet areas! As it is, he always has 4 litter trays.)
