Hello from Florida! The last day of the month means the last day of this countdown of my favorite songs that have been nominated for an Academy Award in the “Best Original Song” category. Continuing my “sentimental, sappy” theme, here’s the song that tops the list of songs with an Oscar nod.
#1: Secret Love - Doris Day
Ooh. Well, I told you I was sappy and sentimental!!!
One of my all-time favorite pop standards, period. That incredible voice. And yes, those rather mundane lyrics. But I don’t care. Doris Day’s performance on this song shows me just how far a terrific voice and delivery can go.
In this case, it went all the way to the award for Best Original Song that year. In 1956 another Doris Day song, “Que Sera Sera,” would win again.
That’s what a great voice will do for a song.
Tomorrow we start TV themes. Meanwhile, thanks for reading.
Secret Love
Written by Sammy Fain and Paul Francis Webster
Recorded by Doris Day
Oscar Winner
From Calamity Jane, 1953
Just how wonderful you are:

@FourWalls She was a great lady. And so pretty with her hair and eyes.

@RebeccasFarm — I like the way she supported Rock Hudson when he was sick, too.

It wasn't until the song started that I realized I know this song!! At first the title didn't ring a bell but yup I knew it.
Glad you made it to Florida.

Ooh that voice will grab you. I first heard Freddy Fender do this but nothing beats Doris.

@FourWalls the older I get the more I forget about all the greats from way back when. It's nice to have a reminder and listen to some good music and yes, Doris was one of the greatest

I think so, too. Her music wasn’t always my cup of tea, but this song is so splendid.

I don’t think I’ve seen the movie, either (or if I did, it was when I was very young). Love the stuffing out of the song!

Understandable, because that carried popularity into the 70s thanks to her television series.
