We made naan bread yesterday

My husband has Type 2 diabetes. He sometimes gets indigestion and is beginning to think it might be the bread that is causing it. He has two slices of toast for breakfast, and lunch is usually a banana sandwich or toasted tuna sandwiches. We mostly buy multi-grain bread. So we have trying to think of alternatives but some men are hard to please as I’m sure many women will attest to! Vince doesn’t like cereals and isn’t keen on salads. I thought maybe pita bread might be better but that’s like eating cardboard too. A post on naan intrigued me so yesterday Vince made naan bread with yoghurt. We both enjoyed it but, apart from not having any yeast, it’s probably not much different to ‘ordinary’ bread. Any comments on whether naan bread would be better for a diabetic? Photo is mine of our naan bread.

I've never tried naan bread but we did download a recipe for it a month or two back... We just haven't tried to make it yet. I'm pre-diabetic and was told to eat whole grain bread or 100% wheat bread if I HAD to have bread...

@Daddyevil do you think you will take that advice? I’ve known people who didn’t listen and wound up with diabetes. I’m not sure what I would do personally.

@shaggin We have a bread here called '9 Grains' and that isn't too bad either. Vince is on tablets but he keeps a close eye on his sugar levels - and his blood pressure.

Indian flatbread would be the best for a diabetic, because it has most fibre content. For Naan breads, check below video

I have eaten naan bread only once. I think I added butter garlic and cheese on top then baked it but it’s been a long time!

Bread can cause some issues and also as it has sugar in it. You can cook flat breads like tortilla out of whole wheat flour it’s very easy and you can make taco style breakfast option by adding fresh veggies, eggs to the bread. Also try millet flat bread like we make roti. It’s very healthy for diabetes

Naan is just bread. I haven’t eaten any bread the last several months to get my glucose down, my glucose went down to a good level but I made biscuits and ate those, now I intend to ration my bread snd hope my glucose doesn’t Go up.

I was beginning to think there wasn't much difference between naan bread and ordinary bread.

@JudyEv Very little bit of difference. It all uses flour, but naan doesn't contain shortening. I don't put yogurt in mine, I use milk with a spoon of vinegar instead.

I have tried naan bread. As @youless mentioned, pumpkin and bitter gourd are good for diabetics.

I am not sure whether naan bread is good for the diabetics or not. I know the pumpkin and bitter gourd are good for them. As to pita bread, this is I made before

My husband and I like naan. We enjoy it on occasion but I don't know how or if it would affect a diabetic. Nice looking bread in your picture.

He has Type 2 so doesn't need injections and he is on tablets. It doesn't impact on our lives too much although we do avoid a lot of sweet foods.

Some make naan bread with yogurt, but the original recipe has yeast. It's not different from the other bread and it also had butter on it. Most cereals are not good if Vince has type 2 diabetes, particularly the most popular , such as corn flakes, puffed rice, bran flakes, and instant oatmeal. They have a high glycemic index.

@JudyEv English muffins made with whole wheat are among my favorite breakfast, with butter and jam or with cream cheese.

What to have for breakfast is quite a problem. I guess we'll end up sticking with toast.

@LadyDuck I loved the French baguettes. I could have lived on them all day every day - with the occasional ice-cream thrown in. lol

I have no idea if it's better than others. The big thing is to limit how much if he is going to eat it

@JudyEv Many things with carbs are better after cooking. For potatoes you can soak them in cold water after peeling and that removes some of the starch. But still have to watch how much you eat

@wolfgirl569 I was surprised to learn about the GI of bread changing when it's toasted too. Thanks for this.

It's a bit tricky and doesn't help that he's a bit fussy. If he has eggs for breakfast then he wants toast with it although apparently toast is better than untoasted.

I don't think he felt any different. It doesn't happen all the time so it's hard to know what's causing it. It's not so much indigestion as a fullness plut lethargy but then, he's not getting any younger.

I wish I could help but I have no idea. My cousin is diabetic and she eats no bread at all. That is all I know. Not sure if this link will tell you any more than you already know.
There are many varieties of bread but not all are suitable for being eaten by diabetics. However there are plenty of breads diabetics can eat.

I do like Naan Bread but only sometimes. I think Naan Bread could be made as a bit low on Sugar but it has Maida (Refined Wheat Flour). That makes it harder to digest. If you explore Breads used in Indian context, now a days, Doctors recommend Wheat Flour mixed with Millets like Ragi, Barley, Sorghum etc. Or even a Flour of Chickpeas ( Chana Atta). Many vendors are now selling such Flours in the market. What I doubt is the authenticity sometimes. The alternative is to get some grinding machines and make by own but the question is - Is that easy? And yeah there is also Maize Flour which if available, can be mixed with the Wheat Flour.

When I was a child we had a hand grinder that we sometimes used to grind wheat into a coarse flour.

This tasted nice but I doubt it's much different to 'real' bread. I think multi-grain is as good as it's going to get, as far as bread goes.
