Should You Show It ?

The idiom: " To wear your heart on your sleeve" simply means -- you show your emotions openly. For example: " Just by looking at her face, l could tell that something was wrong." Are you like that? Can someone tell if if you are have had or are having a bad day or week just by looking at your face? Or are you like -"a closed book" - no one can guess how you are feeling or what your day has been like just by looking at you. Which is better - wearing your heart on your sleeve? Of being like a closed book? Pixabay image.

I think which is better depends on the context. My expression is generally neutral. I try to remember to smile though.

Sometimes if we do hide our feelings all the time we would lose the opportunity to get help if needed. Then again if we expose our vulnerabilities too much, unscrupulous persons could take advantage. I am somewhere inbetween.

@Kandae11 Yes you are right. At totally new places, I still manage to hide my feelings though things might not be in our control always.

People say I look approachable and open . . . and I am to a point. Most assume I am always happy. But most people do not read me well - I keep those inner feelings to myself until I am ready to let someone in on it.

I do the same. Some feelings l keep to myself, then l may let them out when the time is right. Of course if something very serious bothered me l won't wait until l reached breaking point.

@Kandae11 If I look sad or mad, people will feel bad - I don't want to drag them into my emotions. And then there might be the questions - things I may not want to talk about at that moment. So yah, I just hold back until I am ready.

@much2say. Sometimes it can be hard to hold back, but there is a wrong and right time for everything.

When my kids were small and acting up I would be so flustered and stressed on the inside but my sister mentioned many times how calm I appeared on the outside so I guess that is good.

@Kandae11 I think my mother is more like that you can see what she’s thinking by her face. Disgust, anger etc

Yes, there are times when it is best not to show it. However some person just cannot help it - their true feelings show everytime.

@Kandae11 Even when I'm actually pleased, apparently. this is why I would be useless as an actor/actress!

I always smile when I am out in public. If I had a bad day I would stay home where only my pets would know something is wrong but in their case it would be my smell rather than the look on my face.

In what circumstances would I want to have people see my sorrow or pain?
@Kandae11 (57233)

Your pets have a great sense of discernment. Staying away from people on those bad days would be best, but not in some circumstances.

Oh no, no one can tell much about me at all. I spent years in front of a mirror working on customers, so I am well able to act.

I tend to be a close book. I tend to smile even if I have a bad day, the others should not suffer for my bad mood.

Yes indeed. Some people, a lot of people try to make others pay for whatever bad thing is happening in their lives at the moment.

I don't feel either is better. For some reason people are drawn to me, but I won't open up until I know them much better - if then. It depends.

I wear my heart on my sleeve. If im having a bad day or good you will definitely know it. Although I try to be a nice person as often as possible. These days I try to keep a closed book and keep anger to myself and remain silent. Sometimes being a closed book is best. Especially to keep my blood pressure down.

I could have written this about myself. Sometimes it is hard to remain silent, but you know when it is wiser to do so.

It's good to be a closed book sometimes and solve your problems and sometimes you control having your heart on your sleeves when you are too upset.

Some people say that my face tells everything. At times I have tried to hide my emotions but the feedback is that hiding things face wise is not my forte. So now I do not try to hide that much and instead try to talk in a way that comes naturally to me.
