Cats in the cold

I have four cats, all of which were abandoned. They have become domesticated although they like to spend a lot of time out of doors. They have a place in the garage where they can sleep at night, with cushioned chairs, water and food and easy access out if they prefer this. They had a good routine until the cold weather started and now I feel uncomfortable to have them outside when it is cold. they seem to feel the same way and are reluctant to go out at night. Having them inside the house is difficult because they wake us up in the night and also are not too friendly together when enclosed. How much cold weather can we expose them to in the winter?

Hello! It's been a long time! I hope you and your hubby are doing well. If the cats were living outside before you adopted them, then they know how to handle cold weather and know how to find places to shelter from the cold. There are lots of cats that are never adopted and spend their entire lives outside in the cold of winter or the heat of summer.

Only one came with experience, the other three were kittens. The one with experience was small and skinny when she found us so we tend to give her preference as she does not have as thick a coat as the other three. But thanks for the reminder of all the unadopted cats which seem to survive one way or another in the cold. Glad to see you too!

@41CombedaleRoad You're welcome. We take good care of our pets that we tend to forget there are many of them that have never known a pampered lifestyle.

If they have shelter they should be fine. Maybe some old rugs loose on the chairs might give them a place to snuggle out of the cold. And good to see you again too.

I am glad to be back. I missed the chatter. I shall add an old towel or two on the chairs. Thanks for the tip.

Hope you can find a solution for both you and the cats. It must be difficult having them inside and them waking you up at night. I really don't know how much cold weather cats can endure

One of the cats, Lucy, slept with me all night. Head on my pillow...she was good until 6.45 so no complaints. One stayed in the garage on a cushion, one went into a hidey hole outside with a chair and the small one found a chair in the house, but she tends to wake up around 5.00.
