Dealing with mattresses

I was trading comments with a myLotter recently about mattresses. Sorry I can’t quite remember who with but I mentioned that, often, if I have to move a mattress, I end up with the giggles as they are so cumbersome and unwieldly to try to do anything with. I’m currently reading A Gentleman in Moscow, a New York Time bestseller, by Amor Towles. I’m getting to the connection. The gentleman needs a mattress from a hotel room and I quote from page 251 ‘… the mattress was decidedly against it. … It crossed its arms, held its breadth (sic) and refused to budge. When he managed to get it upright, it immediately flopped over his head….’ A page later ‘Lifting the mattress onto its edge, he leaned it against the wall and warned it to stay put, if it knew what was good for it’. I thought this was such magical writing. It made me laugh. Luckily, our current mattress has handles which makes manoeuvring it a little easier. I don’t have a photo of a mattress but here’s a sleeping child. It was a very hot night!

I just currently transferred a mattress from my daughter's room to our room unfortunately I have to wait for hubby since my arms do not have enough power to move it more. I also had to tackle my son's mattress, I wonder why did I buy that, so heavy

They are just so awkward and bulky.

Mine is a mattress and no springs so you can not flip it.

Pretty has one of those memory foam mattresses. It isn't supposed to be flipped or turned.

That's the best sort to have I think. Very sensible.

That also made me laugh, but moving a big mattress is quite a challenge. Funny photo, this kid was trying to have some relief from the heat.

@JudyEv - We still do not have the A/C and with global warming some night in summer are pretty hot. We have a fan and for now it's enough.

Somebody was using their brain when they wrote that description of a mattress! Last week Pretty and I flipped and turned my queen sized mattress... Let's just say Pretty was making up new words by the time we managed to get it done. I was giggling so hard and she was getting mad. The mattress almost won.

Ours is a queen too but luckily it has handles. I'm glad the exercise makes some else giggle, not just me. lol

@JudyEv My mattress has handles on it, too. But Pretty doesn't have the reach to grab more than one handle at a time. One handle isn't enough to keep control of a mattress. I pulled my mattress halfway across my bed and Pretty told me to push the top of it over and she'd catch it... I pushed it over and it took her to the floor. I was giggling too hard to be able to pick it up so she could get out from under it. I think she was more mad at my giggling than at the mattress knocking her onto my thick carpeting.

@DaddyEvil I would find it humiliating to be sat on by a mattress but worse if someone laughed at me!

That made me laugh . The writer's sense of humour and his way with words is so evident. Our master bedroom has a memory foam mattress and that is not supposed to be flipped.. and even moving it is tough with its size and weight..The mattresses in other rooms have been made on order and they have soft cotton in it. We can easily fold them whenever needed..

Funnily enough I've just moved two mattresses with the help of Little One. Oddly (and luckily) the single mattress was at least as heavy as the double, which I had to strap to the car roof!

@JudyEv It was quite easy really with those ratchet straps - they are the best invention! And we only had to take it a mile or so.

@Fleura They are indeed (ratchet straps). Much better than the ocky strap although we thought they were marvellous when they first came out.

I can imagine it would be pretty tricky to strap to the roof of a car. I hope you didn't have to take it far.

Right, mattresses are as unwieldy as can be. A friend recommended that book, and that was a funny scene you mentioned, but I was glad to be finished with it.

Hubs can manage turning and flipping the mattresses with a little help from me. Our master bedroom at home has such a heavy mattress that it can only be rotated. Fortunately, it never needs turning. Great book! I read it a couple of years ago.

The book sounds really good. Great description about moving the mattress. You can see the action and the finger pointing at the mattress. That picture really dates you. I take it that's your son with the nondisposable diapers with plastic pants. Cute picture.

I might manage a single bed but never anything bigger. Even with two of us it sometimes flips down before we have it where we want it.

Oh gosh that’s a hoot isn’t it! My mattress is a full size and impossible for me to move on my own. There are no handles either but my childrens beds that are twins sizes have handles and are much easier to move around. I’m thinking maybe Felicia Kane is who you were chatting to about mattresses? Her bed broke and she had had such a hard time trying to move her mattress.

Yes, you're right. It was Felicia. It's strange how she was talking about her woes then next thing it turns up in a book I'm reading.
