Starting tomorrow we’ll be singing along (or whistling along) to the top ten of my favorite television theme songs. So much for this alphabetizing thing! Oh, wait, I’m going to do that again next month with more movie songs…ones that weren’t nominated for Oscars. Meanwhile, sing along! Where Everybody Knows Your Name - Gary Portnoy NORM!!!!!!! My all-time favorite Norm-ism: “It’s a dog-eat-dog world and I’m wearing Milk-Bone underwear.” Let’s see…in the 60s we had a talking horse, a Martian, a genie, and a witch. Top that 80s. Cheers: Here, hold my beer. We have a recovering alcoholic owning a bar. The interesting thing about Cheers, to me, was that there were so many unlikeable characters. You usually need an antagonistic character (e.g., Frank Burns or Major Winchester on M*A*S*H), but the toxicity between lead characters Sam and Diane was a little — okay, a lot — too much for me, and there’d be weeks or months when I wouldn’t watch it. Even Carla (Rhea Perlman) and her acid-tongue barbs weren’t as bad as what Sam and Diane came up with. And yet, despite those opposites attracting and repelling simultaneously, we kept tuning in. Cheers is one of the classic television series of the 1980s. You aren’t asking, but I’ll tell you anyway: I think it rang rings around the two shows that preceded it on Thursday night (Cosby and Family Ties). For me, “Must-See TV” didn’t start until 9 PM with this show. And it had a great theme song to boot!!! Where Everybody Knows Your Name Written by Gary Portnoy and Judy Hart Angelo Recorded by Gary Portnoy From Cheers, 1982-93 Wouldn’t you like to get away:

Another show that I watched and enjoyed. Norm will always be Norm even if he is playing a different character on a different show

What a great theme song and series. Seems many terrific shows have theme songs that are just as memorable. Cliff as "the bar know it all" was a great character as was Norm. Fun fact: John Ratzenberger tried out for the part of Norm but was not considered suitable for the role. He convinced the writers that a character like Cliff would work and his audition nailed a part for him. All the great sitcoms have terrific ensemble casts.

I haven't listened to the Where Everybody Knows Your Name ,which seems to be from a sitcom.I love some TV theme songs too and frequently have them on the brain.

I don’t know how well American humor transfers to other parts of the world. Cheers was a very popular sitcom here in America in the 80s and 90s.

A great show and another great song. I watched if for a long time. Cosby was a bit to "sweet" for me and I never watched Family Ties.

I never cared for Michael J. Fox as an actor. He always seemed to be overacting in Family Ties, and many other things I saw him in.

Okay, so it’s not me. Back then, they made it seem like “everybody” watched those two shows, while I was more into watching the last three (Cheers, Night Court, and Hill Street Blues).

Oh, I loooved the interplay between Sam and Diane. And, Milkbone underwear? That'd be a bit uncomfortable, don't you think?

Both mom and I just could not get enough of this show, It was awesome and I know all the words to this theme for sure. In fact when I suddenly lost my husband and was left alone in Latvia I had some videos of this show and watched it wishing there was such a place I could go to and be comforted by friends,

My “Cheers” was a record store, not a bar. But everybody knew my name (and, I think, had my credit card number memorized from as much stuff as I bought there ).

I was going to college in Boston when this show was a hit. We went by the bar that was used in the opening credits. I never got into Cheers but the spin-off, Fraiser is in my top 10 favorite shows of all time.

It wasn’t on my must-watch list but I didn’t change the channel when it came on (mainly because Night Court came on right after it!).
