Jenny Dragged Me Down the Steps Tonight

In case you aren't sure who Jenny is she is our 50-pound part lab rescue dog. I headed out the door with her to do a quick walk around the neighborhood at 9:00 pm. so she could relieve herself. I had my phone in my hand so I could use the flashlight. Just after I opened the screen door, I heard her start to bark and pull and felt her jerk my hand that was holding her leash and she dragged me out the door. I fell down the 2 steps and landed on the cement sidewalk. I had let go of the phone and the leash and fell down on my knees and rolled over onto my hip. I started yelling in pain (my hands and knees and hip were all hurting) and wondering what on earth she saw that made her react that way. I heard her barking and running after something and thought it was someone in the neighborhood walking their dog, but no one was there so it must have been a wild animal. I am okay. My knees are both banged up and 2 of my fingers are very bruised. My hip has a slight lump on it. God was watching out for me because I didn't break anything. If it was my 88-year-old husband, I am sure something would have broken. The scariest thing for me was although I was yelling in pain loudly, and none of the neighbors heard me. My husband thought I was yelling at the dog, so he didn't even come to the door, which was still open since I couldn't even close it. He came eventually and I realized I was okay so I didn't need him to help me up. But what if he wasn't home, and I didn't have my phone and I was really hurt? Now that is scary. I was so mad at her but grateful I didn't get hurt badly. She came when we called her but she knew she was in trouble because she came slinking back. Have you ever gotten hurt because of your pet?

@Kouponkaren Sometimes an animal gets excited and forgets their training.

@RubyHawk Yes, and because I wasn't paying attention, I didn't give her any commands because I was busy trying to shut the door behind me.

My late dogs when they saw another dog or cat would drag me down the sidewalk on rare occasions. One incident was when my late dog Wimpy dragged me in the grass and I nearly hit the post of the bus stop as Wimpy was chasing another animal. Lucky I was not hurt.

@Deepizzaguy That sounds like what Jenny did but I was on the stairs and turned around when she started so I ended up getting pulled down the steps sideways. I am pretty sure she saw some sort of wildlife because there were no people or other dogs on the street.

@Kouponkaren That is likely what happened with your dog that she saw wildlife which made her drag you down the stairs.

Very thankful you weren’t seriously hurt. My dad had a black lab that bit him bad enough to draw blood because a puppy was crying (it got its head stuck under the fence and couldn’t get out). That was a mess: animal control came out and quarantined the dog (even though we had licenses and shot proof). My baby dragged me down the street once or twice.

@FourWalls I have been dragged as well but she is pretty good now if I yell No, or tell her to be gentle. She knows what gentle means now.

@jstory07 I am too, and yes, by some miracle, the phone is okay. I think because I was holding the round stuck on things between my fingers when I fell my hand probably broke the fall for it. My hand is bruised but the phone is fine!

I did get a finger and hand hurt once when I got caught in the leash. I'm still paying for that. Oh you sound like you could be really injured. I sure hope not. How frightening. Does your Jenny know any commands? Has she learned to mind- can she sit when told? I ask because I live with Rufus- 40 pounds of athlethic Blue Heeler dog. He knows to heel at my left side. I have profound trouble with steps. I can not walk up or down without hanging onto a railing. Due to Rufus knowing to heel and sit and lie down, when we adopted him, I started to teach him to WAIT. He learned the word wait. He learned to be patient and hang in there, being very still, while I head down or up steps. Once I am down and clear and safe, I call him and he races down to get his big pets and thanks. I hope you are okay. Sorry I am being so mouthy here. You worry me.

@sallypup Aw, that is sweet of you to worry but I am healing well. Just very bruised on my hand, knees and hip. I am very blessed not to have broken any bones. Jenny knows the word "gentle" or "easy" but O didn't say t to her when we went out that time, as I had turned around to close the door behind me, and she saw some type of wildlife and ran after it, leaving me sprawled on the sidewalk. I need to teach her to heel. I may actually take her to a dog obedience class also.

@Kouponkaren Dog obedience class is a great idea. You'll learn how to communicate with Jenny and you'll meet other dog people. I went through two obedience classes with Sally and from there learned how to teach big Leah- black Lab rescued gal who grew to 85 muscled pounds. Since then I've transfered my learning to crafty Rufus. He was taught by somebody else to heel well but he also learned stuff like "wait" from me. Its a matter of communication and treats and toys and patience.

Glad you are only bruised up. Never like that by the dogs. Horses have done worse

@Kouponkaren I have had it all I think. Run over, kicked, thrown, hit in the mouth by a head, and stepped on. But still love them.

@wolfgirl569 Oh yes, I can only imagine about horses. I love them, but am wary of their strength.

I am so sorry you got hurt! Thank God it wasn't worse than it was, but I'm sure you'll be hurting for a good while. Do you think you'll need a doctor to check your hip? You're in my prayers.

@1creekgirl No, the hip and knees are all bruised, as is my hand but no doctor is needed, thankfully. It really was a God thing I am sure.

So glad you are ok! That could have been much worse. And yes scary that no-one came to help at all. Another time maybe keep your phone safe in your pocket and use a separate flashlight. And teach the dog not to pull!

Oh, I am so sorry, that must have been scary, too. I am glad you didn't break any bones! I used to keep rescue dogs and foster them, I did this for years. I had one big black Lab for a few weeks on it's way to a Lab rescue. I had him on a leash, I was holding the leash. A deer streaked across the field behind my house, she saw it and lunged so, so hard. I heard the bone in my wrist snap. It was a nasty break. Needless to say, another foster mama had to take that Lab over so I could heal. That dog was so strong. After that, I just fostered smaller dogs.
