Things that go bump in the night.

My partner has a great capacity for sleeping, an ability for which I envy him, as I often wake up in the early hours and can’t get back to sleep.
But he does sometimes wake up in the middle of the night, jump out of bed and rush around the house trying to find the source of some noise he has heard, which I invariably haven’t heard, which is a bit worrying. However he never finds the source, so perhaps the noises are not real.
In contrast real noises wake me up, but he seems to sleep through those quite peacefully! This morning for example I was woken at dawn by barking noises outside, which I guess must have been a fox or something. When I asked him this morning what he thought the noises might have been he hadn’t heard a thing!
So I’ve come to the conclusion that he only wakes up when he dreams he’s heard a noise, and real noises don't disturb him unless it’s something really loud like our neighbours’ burglar alarm.

Sometimes I wake up because I hear a noise in my sleep... Then can't find anything that would have made the noise... Until later. A week or two ago I heard a quiet noise that seemed right by the bed. Pretty swore she never heard anything and I must have dreamed it... I found what made the noise today. I have a plastic grocery bag full of stuff hanging in my bedroom closet on a plastic hanger. I found that bag of stuff at the bottom of my closet with the hanger broken in half. I guess the weight was just too much for the hanger.
Not everything we hear in our sleep is imaginary.

@Fleura We've had that happen with the back scrubber hanging on the shower wall, too. Pretty swears I'm imagining things and then I find that thing in the tub instead of hanging on the wall.

It's interesting how different people have different abilities and sensitivities when it comes to sleep. While your partner has a great capacity for sleeping and can sleep through real noises, he wakes up when he dreams he's heard a noise, which is a unique experience. On the other hand, you wake up to real noises, which can be frustrating at times.
It's also fascinating how the mind works during sleep and how dreams can influence our perception of the world around us. Your partner's experience of waking up when he dreams he's heard a noise could be a manifestation of the power of the subconscious mind.
Overall, it's important to prioritize good sleep hygiene to ensure quality sleep and avoid disruptions, whether it's through noise-canceling devices or other means. It's also essential to be mindful of the impact of sleep on overall health and well-being.

Yes the subconscious mind can be very powerful!
I am mindful of the importance of sleep, this is why it's so frustrating that I find going back to sleep so difficult. If something wakes me early in the morning (like 4 or 5 am) I often find I can't go back to sleep and I end up lying around until it's time to get up which is both frustrating and a waste of time.

Vince can sleep through all sorts of things but the least noise usually wakes me. I think it is something to do with sleeping with one ear awake when the kids were babies. I sometimes bounce out of bed and run round checking noises. Sometimes I smell burning too and that gets me running round the house sniffing to try to find the cause. Luckily this is only one storey.

I sometimes hear noises inside my head. I don't think I've imagined them, and I'm not talking about creaky house noises. Those I can identify as being outside my head. The last time this happened I had the impression a 1"x2"x1/2" layered section popped out of my skull. Disconcerting to say the least.
And look! We have the same style bed.
