Yesterday I went to Landers Superstore with my family to get a few essentials. I don't usually go to big stores like this to get items that are by the bulk, but we thought it might be good to bring the kids to Landers for a bit of shopping and some snacks.
I just bought some rolled tissue paper (the only thing that I'd probably hoard, pandemic or no) and some fresh meats. I like that their meats are clean and neatly packed. And I found some that are on sale, so I took advantage of that. I got chicken breast fillet with skin, native pork sausages, ground beef, and marinated pork teriyaki.
I also happen to have spotted boxes of vegan sausage patties on sale. A box of 6 was selling for Php 125 (a little over $2). It was apparently at 70% off. Not bad. My kids like vegan meats so I got one box just to try. We had them today for breakfast. Each patty is wedged in a thick anise-flavored bun and joined by good friends lettuce, tomatoes, onions and cucumber. So good and very filling!
Have you tried vegan meats before?

My son would not try them. I am not vegan but am always willing to try things. We were at Costco, and he was looking at the meats. He ended up bringing me vegan ground meats and I did point out they were vegan. He said, they look delicious, he wanted to buy them, so we did. He ended up loving them, we made burgers on the grill with part of it, he was impressed that the meat wasn't dry and wasn't greasy. I couldn't believe it. He is one of those guys who makes bad food choices most of the time. Miracles happen!!

i'm happy to know this. some people just find the term 'vegan meat' absurd and i get their point. but i still think that these vegan meats make good substitute as long as the ingredients are well sourced, low in sodium and do not contain harmful preservatives.
have you tried portobello mushroom burgers? i love them!

@MarieCoyle True. I wouldn't even crave beef burgers if I had my portobello burgers in front of me. Yum.

Oh, they are so good, I agree! Sometimes in the summers, my daughter and I buy those huge portobello mushrooms and grill them just like burgers, they are so delicious with Swiss cheese. Don't even need a bun, just dig in!

@MGjhaud i see. it's a premiere city so it's possible that they'll put up a landers branch there in the future. do you already have S&R?

Good shopping trip!
Yes, my son is a vegetarian/vegan and serves that to us when we have dinner at his house. I have bought them, too, not only for him and his girlfriend, but for my husband and I to have on occasion. They taste pretty good and are filling.

@almostoveryou True!
My son has never liked meat, but became a vegan/vegetarian about 10 years ago after being a pescatarian. The reason he isn't a full vegan is because he loves cheeses and uses eggs in baking.

@DianneN I see. I used to be a pescatarian too. I'd been dreaming of transitioning to veganism but I have issues with poor iron absorption, so the doctor advised that I should go flexitarian instead and eat red meat once in a while. I can't seem to give up eggs either! So I just assign a meal time when I can be faux vegan

Sounds like a positive review from you of vegan patties. Ive also seen something similar in Puregold. Im a bit hesitant to try but want to.

I've tried the ones from Puregold too. Most of them are okay except that they tend to be salty. This one that I tried from Landers (the brand is "Beyond") is flavorful but not salty.

@yoalldudes yes, they tend to be on the costly side especially if you prefer to eat more of the "meat". i usually just get the ground vegan meat and sautee it with vegetables. this way i get to save a bit of money.

@almostoveryou I'll take note of that. I asked my officemate about this and I learned that the vegan patty, tocino etc are more expensive than meat.

@almostoveryou Hmm.... I consider myself half-vegetarian?
Because I still some fish meat to fill the protein.
But, most of the time, I'll go vegetarian.
