Vegetable and fruits prices soar high in my city just because tomorrow is Holi.

I visited the local market today to purchase some lime. I got shocked by the price. One lime cost me Rs.7. Holi starts from tomorrow and would continue for two days. Prices of fruits and vegetables are soaring high. This price won't decrease now. Summers are nearing and most people would need lime juice whether as a soft drink or for their lunch or dinner along with water rice which is called "pakal" in Odisha and "panta bhaat" in Bengal. It would be impossible for the poor to buy a piece of lime. Black grapes are pretty cheap at this time but I had to shell out Rs. 90 just for 500gms. Fruits are out of reach for the poor and middle class. With inflation food prices are rising, increasing the number of starving people in India.

I find it very annoying that stores put up their prices whenever there is a holiday. I think it is very greedy to do this. Fruit and vegetables are expensive here too.

@aninditasen That is happening here too. Some can no longer afford very many vegetables and/or fruit.

That's the reason it has become difficult to eat healthy and they often fall sick.

So many foods are so expensive here, too. It's awful that they raise prices during holidays to make food unavailable and prohibitive for so many people. Enjoy your holiday!

Same here but nothing like the prices during the Holidays. It's unbelievable. May you and your family have the best Holi celebration though.

I as a widow can't play holi or add colours to anybody. We just perform the prayers related to Holi. On this day we offer tiny mango buds along with its flowers to Lord Krishna and Radha and pray for a good harvest and fill everyone's life with prosperity. We also offer flowers and sweets.

I did buy lime and fruits as I need them. My lime tree hasn't borne any fruits this season yet, maybe because it was trimmed last year.

Our fruits and vegetables are pricey. I love fresh broccoli. It's just priced way out of sight now. I do manage to find onions, carrots, and potatoes at a decent price if I shop sales.

@aninditasen I do have to shop hard for the onions at times or I will pay way too much. Bought a bag yesterday at Costco, very reasonal price. I chopped up 5 of them and froze that in little ziploc bags to cook soups and such with, I still have lots left. As for carrots, I grew some thiss last year in one of my flower beds--and I got a lot of carrots! I shredded and froze and cut them up and froze and I think I will plant some more at garden time. They required absolutely no care and were delicious.

I really don't understand why are the governments allowing the middle men in fruit and vegetable trading. It's because of them prices are increasing.

Its so sad that the prices on everything are so high. Even here the cost of fruits and vegetables has increased. The focus is always on "eating healthy" yet the prices make it so difficult.

This inflation is trampling me below poverty line.I have not bought any fruits for weeks. Today , I bought bananas. That's what was within my buying power.

In my country it's the same way, if there is a big event like Ramadan, Eid al-Fitr, Christmas or New Year then all the prices of basic commodities will go up, besides that inflation also greatly affects the prices of basic commodities.

Earlier people used to buy high priced things during festivals but now sellers keep waiting for customers and buyers don't turn up because pay package has not increased accordingly.
