I got electricity, I got a warm house, I got another song for the monthlong list of favorites that came from movies to spring on you. Who could ask for anything more????
Here’s today’s tune.
I Got Rhythm - Judy Garland and Tommy Dorsey with Mickey Rooney
Ethel Merman originated this song on Broadway in Girl Crazy in 1930. After the advent of talkies, the film Girl Crazy brought the song to the big screen. That proved to be a popular movie, as it was remade in 1943 with Judy Garland.
The song, however, has a life of its own. It’s an American classic, and the list of people who’ve done it is long. Heck, Merman even re-did it on a disco album in the late 70s!
A group called the Happenings had a top five hit with the song in the 60s.
Girl Crazy isn’t the only movie that utilized the song. There’s a marvelous scene in An American in Paris where Gene Kelly sings and dances while entertaining a group of children. It was also in Mr. Holland’s Opus.
What a classic!
I Got Rhythm
Written by George and Ira Gershwin
Recorded by Judy Garland and Tommy Dorsey with Mickey Rooney
From Girl Crazy, 1943
(Also in Girl Crazy, 1932 and An American in Paris, 1951)
Old man trouble, I don’t mind him:

Ethel was more of a punch line in the 80s like in Good Morning, Vietnam or Airplane! 2.

I’d see him on talk shows then in an old movie and think, wow, he was really that young once?!

Just don’t listen to Ethel Merman while you’re recovering from stomach flu!

@TheHorse — I think that’ll hurt your mental state more than your physical state, although it certainly won’t help your stomach.

@FourWalls Noted. Maybe I'll go watch a video about how Trump's day was today. I was out of that loop. Wait...

@FourWalls Judy Garland was a good singer! I didn't follower her (before my time) career, though.

Hearing Ethel sing always made me want to cover my ears. The Gene Kelly version was great.

That line Robin Williams had in Good Morning, Vietnam about the US using Ethel to jam Russian radars is a riot.

The Happenings oh yes, I remember their version!!! Quite a different take on that song than the Merm's version, lol. Always enjoyed their song "See You in September." The vocals have a sort of Four Seasons feel to it for me.
Anyway, that's one thumbs up pick
