Elementary Schoolboy: "It gave me a sense of capability." Minnetonka, Minn.

I heard a great interview this morning between all the war news & economy scares & political news. Part of it was what that kid said. The school needed a playground, a playground accessible to all the kids in the school, including those with disabilities. So with the help of parents to start with, those kids went to businesses asking for donations, had bake sales, made art about the need, in a word, did all it takes to transform a playground into something for all kids. One donation from a local business of $200,000 was a big help, but the total was $700,000 and Phase 1 of the project will begin this summer. When I heard that kid say what I quoted at the top, I knew it was worth writing about.

@JamesHxstatic Kids have to speak up to let their voices be heard and I am so glad that the kid did speak up and that things got done and how much they raised and that Phase 1 will begin this summer. That was a very nice thing to include all in the playground situation and not just a few.

@JamesHxstatic That is great that they want to help other schools as well. Is it schools in their area or other cities?

That's some kid! It's a worthwhile project, but not unique. I've read about others doing the same to raise money to build safe playgrounds for all kids. It's still very commendable

It really is. Hearing him use the word "capability," impressed me too.

Kids really need this feeling in their lives. Parents and teachers need to make opportunities available for kids to feel capable.

It is great that the kid led the charge and got the school community motivated to get the playground Phase 1 funded and launched.

@JamesHxstatic They did an excellent job and the fact they raised the money proves that there are still good people.

That’s very heartwarming, considering how people with disabilities are often subjected to bullying

That's so wonderful. Such a good news story. It sometimes just takes that first step, doesn't it? Good for them.

That kid is thinking of others - not only himself. He should make a great future leader.
