Out of 397,000 people throughout Kentucky without power on March 3, 395,000 have their electricity back. What a blessing! Just in time for the colder weather this weekend. I’ll get to stay home and enjoy hot chocolate (the drink, not the band ). And how about we all enjoy another favorite song from the movies? If I Were a Rich Man - Topol Understand that I wrote this list two months ago, so there’s no way this could have been anything but a weird coincidence: Chaim Topol passed away this morning in Israel. While Zero Mostel made the role of Tevye popular in the Broadway production of Fiddler on the Roof, Topol was the star of the show in Israel and England. When the film was being cast, director Norman Jewison opted for Topol over Mostel for the lead role. (Here’s an interesting footnote: according to Picky Wedia, Frank Sinatra expressed interest in the role. That would’ve made this song “If I were a rich man, doo be doo be doo.” ) With the happy feeling of this song you’d think Fiddler on the Roof was a lighthearted movie. Oh, no. It’s ferociously sad, a look at a Jewish community being torn apart by pogroms in czarist Russia. It’s more sad because we’re seeing the hatred rearing its ugly head all over the world again. But this song has a universal appeal, the notion of what the poor think being rich is like (“one long staircase just going up and one even longer coming down”). Throughout the movie we see just how rich Tevye is without money. As Eddy Arnold sang in “The Richest Man in the World,” “what are riches but contentment after all.” Indeed. If I Were a Rich Man Written by Sheldon Harnick and Jerry Bock Recorded by Topol From Fiddler on the Roof, 1971 For the town to see and hear:

I've never seen the film but it's really one I'd really like to see. I keep a list of films I want to watch and when we visit our son in Melbourne he plays them for us.

I hope you get to see it. It’s quite sad, though.

@JudyEv — oh, it’s worth seeing, like a number of sad movies like Saving Private Ryan.

@FourWalls So I keep reading so maybe I won't make too much effort after all.

Yep, except as the song would come on I was singing - if I were a rich woman alas, it never happened or as a friend of mine agreed with me - probably when my ship came in I was at the airport

I’m sure we all feel like that. Or if our ship comes in it’ll be the SS Minnow with a hole in the side.

My wife just reminded me that she played Grandma Tseitl (spelling?) in a production of Fiddler when she was teaching our Air Force kids in Germany.

It was a great show and a great tune. I saw a local production here years ago. The guy who played Tevye was amazingly great. He sounded like the two you mentioned. It was a packed house for I can't recall how many shows.

It’s such a great play or movie, and with the right cast it’s hard to mess up. I say “with the right cast” because I’m pretty sure it would have been something different had Sinatra played Tevye.

@JamesHxstatic are you asking me? I don't know the song or singer. Ask @FourWalls I don't know the majority of the songs she posts. If it isn't Jimmy Buffett, all bets are off.

Ah, to heck with this convoluted notion one doesn't need money to be rich. All hogwash if you ask me. But it's a nice idea. I have never seen the movie. Just not my cup of tea.

@FourWalls Much to do about nothing. The bank was FDIC insured. lol I mean, yeah, it's terrible when banks fail. Lots of problems come from that. But the depositors don't lose anything.

Topol sings Hot Chocolate: Every 1’s a Rich Man! He had Alzheimer’s, so tragic for the family.

I just watched the "If I Were a Rich Man" video and I must say, it brought back some great memories of the classic movie, "Fiddler on the Roof". The song has such a catchy tune and the lyrics are witty and playful. It's no wonder it's become a beloved classic over the years.
