Is it good to let kids learn how to plant?

During my primary school years, our teachers taught us how to plant vegetable at the school garden. For them, we need to learn how to plant at a young age. Some of my classmates were so good because they were trained at home before. Nowadays, I noticed that some students in the primary level are not doing this. Despite the situation, I am encouraging my niece to plant some plants at home. What do you think about this concern? Image Credit: allaboutgardening.com

I don't understand. Some kids like to plant flowers or vegetables and some kids don't care. If the kids want to plant something, help them learn how to do it correctly. If they aren't interested, then don't force them.

If they do not want to do it, I will surely not going to force them. At least, I had tried to influence them.

@Shavkat That's good... When my youngest brother and I were seven or eight, we wanted to plant a garden like mom and dad always did. They gave us a small part of the yard to dig up and then gave us seeds to plant. Every couple of days, I saw dad looking over our garden when he thought we wouldn't notice but he never said or did anything... When veggies started coming on ripe, mom and dad made a big deal out of pointing out that my brother and I grew the veggies we were eating for that meal. We planted our own garden for years...

WE always had a big garden when I was growing up so I learned at an early age. When I did daycare I let each child show mw which was their favorite plant of the ones I had. We would then take a clipping from it and put it in water. They got to see the clipping root and most of the children was really excited about it but there was some that didn't care. They also got to help plant seeds in my garden if they wanted too.

@Shavkat I am glad that my granddaughter likes to help me with my house plants and the vegetables that I put outside. She learned how to gather seeds from some of my outside flowering plants.

It is also the same thing here. My mom used to have a garden and she did a lot of planting here. As their kiddies, we were influenced to do the same thing every weekends before.

We also do planting trees during my school days annually. I am not sure if the schools will do this activity. They are not that confident because of the Covid- 19.

It's good to let kids love Nature and respect it. But some kids might not enjoy it like some adults would not like gardening. I would not force it on them. When my daughters were young, they showed interest and helped me in the garden. Now they don't find it interesting.

I agree with you. I must say that young ones are not that interested of gardening. But I would still encourage them to try. Although there are some individuals who are not a green thumb.

@Shavkat Many don't have a green thumb. But I have seem many improving with time and practice. Even plants respond to your love and care

I think this is happening because the education system has changed over time.

I am not sure if schools will have this kind of activity because of the coronavirus. I assumed that it would happen after 3 years here.

We never learned as we lived in apartments in the center of a city. When I visited my grandmother during summer, it took very little time to learn to plant flowers and vegetables.

I agree with this kind of situation. I guess I am lucky to have a backyard garden during my childhood years. My mother obliged us to plant and water them as needed at that time.

@Shavkat - We grew lentils in a bed of wet cotton in this season, to see them sprouting for Easter. That was a tradition to remember the re-birth of Jesus.

Of course it's good! Everyone should know how to do basic things like this, and should know where their food comes from.

I agree with you. I do hope parents around the world need to add this outdoor activity for their children. They should balance the usage of modern gadgets and gardening or other household chores if possible.

@Shavkat Indeed! They should be taught essential skills such as the basics of how to grow and prepare food, how to look after a home. If they are not interested they don't have to continue but they should certainly know how the process works.

I am with you. Most kiddies are so into modern gadgets. They are forgetting outdoor activities like gardening. The sad part is that most parents are making these gadgets as nannies of their kiddies.

We had also gardening time in elementary grades and it was good. Maybe not for all pupils but for me it was. Not all enjoy gardening though.

What children learn is schools is really up to the school, the teacher and were you live. My kids school do the plant cycle so yes in Elementary school so some teachers do let the kids plant a plant, but it can get messy and there isn't always the proper stuff or space for them to go. It's not Videl to learning. Middle school and high school they usually there is not time at all. Lots of family's garden but we are all not good at taking care of plants. All three of my kids did pea bods and grew them in little dixe cups and brought them home. None of them made it to long. The youngest did made it through most of summer but he pulled the darn thing before I transplanted into a bigger pot and killed it. They all know how to plant. You don't have to do it to accentual know how to do it.

In school, we are taught to plant veggies, trees and flowers. I think that kids must learn this skill at an early stage. They should also learn there is money in it.

I do think that we need to teach them. We also do planting of trees during my school days. I think my niece had done this one time before the pandemic happened.
