A Dream Came True for a Friend

Many years ago, in the 1980s, interest rates were very high (up to 14%) and the real estate insurance business that I was a manager in was very slow. The board of directors I reported to was unhappy, so they fired me. I took a job a few days later in a different world, selling drive through systems and background music to retail businesses like grocery stores and restaurants. I even sold a subscription my first day on the job (It was better music than Muzak). A young man named David was my technician, doing installing and repairs. But David had a dream. He was 21 and wanted to be a pilot. He even parked near the busy Portland airport some nights with his girlfriend to watch planes land and take off. I left that business after about a year to go back to insurance and lost track of David, but did find out that he had been to flight school, got a job flying customers into Reno, Nevada to gamble at casinos there. A few months ago, David, now in hs 50s found me on Facebook. He has been flying 747s for 30+ years now, delivering cargo all over the world. He loves his job, of course. He posted today that he has the honor of flying the last 747 off the Boeing assembly line from Alaska to South Korea today. Apparently, it means a lot to get chosen for that flight. What a job! He just got back from a great flight to a part of Spain he had not seen too. It's great to see dreams come true for people.

Agreed. I love hearing that people manage to have good dreams. Even better is that he has a job he loves. Congrats to him.

He must have worked really hard to achieve his goal to be a pilot. He had not gone beyond high school when we worked together.

So nice to hear of dreams coming true for people. Learning to fly a plane doesn't look like an easy feet.

@celticeagle I can imagine. I flew from Chicago to Michigan across the Lake in about a 12 passenger plane and it was strange.

That is great, and I think it is important to have dreams. It is wonderful when they come true, but often they take focus and hard work. However, that probably makes them all the sweeter in the end..

I'm sure his dream took a lot of focus, maybe more than I ever had.

David sounds like he has had an adventurous life. For a year or so my daughter took flying lessons, flying Cessnas.

He has, I'm sure. He was such a nice, quiet 7th Day Adventist kid when we mat, recently married. He's single now and seems quite happy.
