I am waiting for you to say...

...thank you. This is what I said to the salesclerk in a pharmacy today. I am not sure if she is rude or not. I bought some maintenance medicine. She gave me the medicine and got my money without saying anything. I did not mind about it because it is not a big deal for me. Not until she said, "The money that you gave is exact for the medicine." I responded back that I am waiting for you to say thank you. P.S. I thanked her when she handed the medicine. There is no reaction on her face or no words came out from her mouth at that time. What's your call on this situation? Image Credit: leadingwithtrust.com

Why was she supposed to thank you? I don't see a reason for her to tell you thank you. Did you do something for her?

I am used to hearing thank you when buying some medicine in this pharmacy. It is not a requirement and I realized that she's a new salesclerk.

@Shavkat I might have told you to have a good day after you paid for something but I wouldn't have thanked you. You bought something from me. You should say thank you.

@JudyEv It is my fault that I did not include the phrase thank you in my posted discussion. I did say thank you to her upon getting the medicine. She did not react when I did this.

I usually say thank you whenever I buy anything, and they also say thank you. I guess, not everyone knows this magic word. But there are rare occurrences when they don't say it, and I don't care at all because their actions reflect on their personalities, so it's not on me. I take it with a grain of salt and go my happy way. I wouldn't care less.

In my country the first thank you comes from the buyer and the salesperson says "you are welcome".

@Jenaisle I am so silly that I did not include the other side of the story. Actually, it is my nature to say thank you when buying things from the sellers. I did utter thank you to her but she does not have any reaction.

Interesting and you would not make it in America, probably would but being dramatic. She does not say thank you because no one says it to her. This is actually true they will behave to a degree the way their environment is. Most Americans know this they just choose to be rude.

@crossbones27 I am sure I can survive in America. I had worked with some Americans before and we were like a pea in a pod. Next time, I will not say thank you to her. I will just wear my moon face.

Well, no one says thank you here when we pay for something we asked. They say good morning/afternoon/evening when we come in and the same and "have a good day" when we go, no need for a thank you.

@LadyDuck I just felt insulted when I did not receive any acknowledgment when saying thank you to her along the process of transacting with her at that time.

That's rarely done by most salesclerks. Sometimes it's even me who says thank you especially if my senior card is honoured.lol.

The worst part if the salesclerks keep on following you. As if you are a shoplifter. I hate when they do this.

We don´t expect a thank you from a saleman or saleswoman here unless we have done something very polite such as taking up from the floor something that he/she dropped. Sometimes we evn thank the sales parson when they treat us in a very nice way.

I think if she just smiled or acknowledged me for thanking her. then it would be fine. I did say thank you to her at that time when handling the medicine and getting my money. I hope she would not do this again next time.

Good for you. A sales lady did that one time and I said, "Do you not feel well today?" She looked surprised and asked why. I said, "You haven't spoken to me or even looked at me this whole time." Don't know if it even registered with her. And sometimes when clerks don't say thank you, I say you're welcome. It confuses them.

We are on the same page. Even if I did not say thank you, she needs to say it. It is a business protocol to maintain a good rapport with the client/s. It is how business works. In fact, I did say thank you when having the medicine. I just felt her rudeness when she told me the last statement sarcastically. That is why I said the phrase automatically to her. It is considered a poor customer service if I may say.

@Shavkat In India we have people at the counter who calculates and accepts the bills. The sales people only help us in selecting the items we want. Small shops has the owner itself who has to deal with a number of customers.

@Shavkat Many are too fast to think of these little things that should happen out of routine. In general a lot of people are just rude these days. It is most unfortunate. But I don't let them interfere with who I am.

I have met many people with such attitude I just talk to them in a polite manner that they realize they are on the wrong and humble themselves. I once did that to a certain man he became furious and chased me out of his shop! Mark you he was the one who was so rude to me. I just smiled while leaving his shop

I do think that some people are like this despite being professionals. At some point, I tried my best to ignore them. However, if I think it is not acceptable, then I will need to call their attentions. I am sorry that you experienced this with a rude man that you mentioned. If I were you, I will report the incident to a policeman.

Here, that depends on the shop's practice. Some sales do say "Thank You" when you buy something from the shop. Some may say "Welcome" when you enter the shop.
