Buy Yourself a Like-new Used Book

Eugene, Oregon
March 26, 2023 7:53pm CST
I read a post by @shaggin asking if you have bought a book for yourself lately. I told her about a couple of websites I use since I am addicted to buying books. One is abebooks.com, where new or like new books can be bought for $3 or $4 and shipping is free from many, if not most sellers. Goodwill books is another, but they don't pay for postage. I am always amazed when I buy used books by what great or even like new condition they are in when they arrive and I'll say again, postage free.

You can buy used books here at the library. I got a bunch for my greatgrandchildren. They will give you out of date magazines to. Which I read and put in the little library when I am done reading them.

@jstory07 my oldest and I used to stop at every library we saw to look for used books. Ours in town is higher priced than other ones . Magazines if I wanted them though are only .10 and a lot of times there’s a table of free books.

Most of my life I have only bought second hand books. I studied Literature and for a long part of my life I was a Professor at the University, directed workshops and was a writer in my native language. Books were my thing but I did not have enough money to buy all of them new. The only times I read new books was when I read my brother´s books as he would not touch a used book

Strange that he would not do that. I feel bad because the writer of the book does not make any money from the sale though.

That’s great info thanks! My daughter buys a lot of manga I wonder if there are any on that site. eBay is great for low priced books but I’ll have to check out Abebooks to compare.

When I buy used books that still look new, I always feel good for getting the best deal (for my pocket).

@jefferson126 Yes, but the poor writer makes no money, so I feel bad when I buy used.

That's interesting, 'real' books are having something of a resurgence here as young people still like to buy a real book especially if it has something special like beautiful artwork on the cover.

I have too much of a book collection to buy anymore really, I get free books on the Kindle though. Actually, the last paperback I got for free from the library just this past week. I feel lucky to have gotten it because it is marked with a 17.99 tag. The author came for the Virginia Festival of the Book though, and I guess made some promotional titles available. That must be what happened.

@JamesHxstatic I agree. It is a cute little book. Hmm, he might not like me to refer to it as "cute" so I guess I will say insightful..

I used to buy a lot of books. Now I read so much online that I don't have much time anymore for books.

I have mainly bought used books for many years! Libraries and thrift shops are where I get them . . . as many of the mom and pop type used book stores have had to close shop from a long time ago. I'll have to check out abebooks!

The last hard bound book I bought off Amazon was a nearly new book about Marie Antoinette. I am fascinated about her life.

I was going to send a book to a myLotter but I've just worked out that postage will cost me a small fortune. I am about to beg her forgiveness for renegging on my promise.

Really, that's too bad. I've heard that international postage is very high. There is no special rate for books?

We have a used book store nearby and I buy books at goodwill store. I have so many books I haven’t read. I don’t have room for more but I still go to the library every three weeks for books to read. I also trade books at our free book box.

You are lucky, we pay all the time for postage and it's more expensive than the price of the used book. I pay less buying new at Amazon Italy, if I reach the amount of $ 35 shipping is free.

When I buy books I usually do it through Amazon because I get Amazon gift cards through some survey sites and they also have used books if I want to have books for less, The books are usually in very good condition,

I use Abe books too, as well as other sites and of course charity shops. But online sellers are useful when you are looking for some less-popular or out-of-print book.
