With one eye firmly set on the weather I’m also watching y’all get up and dance! That’s right, it’s the penultimate song on my list of favorite songs out of movies that didn’t get Academy Award nominations, and it should have you up and dancing. I mean, I’m dancing to it as I listen…and I’m in a booth in a restaurant as I type this!
Let’s party!
#2: You’re the One That I Want - Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta
And in the “what are you, Amish” confession of the day (Angie said that in a reply years ago when I admitted I’d never seen Rocky and I thought it was hilarious), I’ve never seen all of Grease. I’ll go you one better: I’ve never seen any movie John Travolta was in. Yes, including (insert whichever one you’re thinking of).
When Welcome Back, Kotter was popular Travolta became the “teen idol” from the show. He even released a single called “Let Her In” (no relation to Wings’ “Let ‘Em In”…at least Sir Paul can sing). Well, me and my Boz Scaggs fanaticism were NOT impressed.
However, when this song was released as a single, I bought it. It’s great! It’s fun! And it wasn’t nominated???????
Grease, like a number of the movies with songs on this list, was originally a play. Now, this song was written specifically for the movie by John Farrer, who’d written a number of songs for Olivia Newton-John before (including her hit “Have You Never Been Mellow”). But it has such a perfect 50s vibe that the fact that it was new was lost on the Academy, and this didn’t get an Oscar nod. (“Hopelessly Devoted to You” did, however get nominated. Of course, I like this song better.)
When Sandy shows up as a changed woman it makes Danny go berserk. It also provides on fantastic song.
You’re the One That I Want
Written by John Farrer
Recorded by Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta
From Grease, 1978

@MarieCoyle — oh, so you and Nj are telling me I didn’t miss much by skipping the movie and buying this 45.

@RebeccasFarm — that’s why they’re miserable. Their music is awful.

I have seen all of Grease, several times, on screen and even once on stage. I like this song, too, but "Summer Nights" is my favorite from the movie because it has some personal meaning to me.
It always bothered me that Sandy slutted herself up for Danny rather than Danny improving himself to rise above his loser-for-life status.

What do you expect. A boy going straight doesn’t sell.

@FourWalls I know, I know. Still, it's just another piece of making being an ignorant loser cool and making intelligence and knowledge something to be shunned.

@FourWalls Can Olivia join me?
(well, technically not since she recently passed, but I guess I could always substitute Olivia Wilde haha)

This song isn't mellow. And if you did see all of the movie, either is Olivia by the end of the film. Must have been those Pink Ladies influence
I thought the movie was good. The song not as much. It's hard listening to Barbarino's squeaky voice.
He does a much better job doing his Disco dancing or riding a bull

The good thing is that Olivia was such a dynamo singer that she more than made up for Travolta’s tin. I think his hit when he was on Welcome Back, Kotter (“Let Her In”) proved that he can’t sing for anything!

@dgobucks226 — yes. I will not post a link to the song because it’s my policy to not contribute to the continuation of bad music.

I am not a fan of disco, although I will give Travolta credit for the dance scenes I’ve seen from Saturday Night Fever.
