It will be great to see my writing in Print

Back in December, I submitted five poems to an online journal and was surprised (after many messages "declining" my submissions that they published all five in a January issue. I was very happy about that, of course. (I did have some accepted previously for an anthology and a jazz poetry site). Now, I'm even happier to receive word that the poems they published in that online journal will be a book. While there is no pay involved, and I have to buy a copy of the book, it will be a nice thing to have. I ordered one for me and one for my daughter. I'm still submitting and hope to see more published this year.

Congratulations on your writing success especially after they rejected you several times. I guess they finally realized how good your entries were.

Thank you! Submitting is always hit & miss. There are so many places to submit, it takes a lot of research.

@JamesHxstatic The main thing is to understand the guidelines and write for the site you are sending it to. I once sold a story to a garden magazine. It was a contest on Helium and the magazine would select the story they wanted. The guidelines were to write a true garden story and they did not want a rainbows and sunshine type of ending. I wrote a funny ending. Even though the rating system by peers rated it low, mine was the one they wanted.

They should have given that book as a gift Anyway you seem to be satisfied just seeing those poems in there.

That would be nice, but getting a book ready to go costs quite a bit. The cover I saw a photo of is really nice and I think there are some photos too.

Congratulations on your poetry being accepted and printed. Doesn’t it feel good to see your work in print? I’ve had poems printed in poetry books and magazines, some in chap books. I haven’t sent any in lately. As you say, you must send in a handful to get a few printed. I’m taking a break right now but I’ll send in more soon.

@JamesHxstatic Why won't you get paid because they were published? Now, you can see your work in print and not only you but your daughter will be able to see it in print too.

Few poetry journals pay in the US. Poetry writing is sort of a hobby until you succeed a lot.

Few poetry journals offer pay in the US. Until you become more successful or win some contests, pay is rare.

Congratulations Jim! I think it is just a numbers game--so you have to send out lots of submissions--but once you find editors that like your work, it is a lot easier!
