Are you ever surprised by how people react to situations? Before I was diagnosed with breast cancer four months ago, if you had asked me who I thought would show the most care during this time, my guess would have been totally wrong. People that we've gone to church with the last three years have barely shown any concern. None have visited and only two have called. I don't expect a lot of attention, but I would have (and have done) more for them. The biggest surprise has come from the people from our former church. They have brought food numerous times, called, texted, sent cards, and visited when I could have visitors. Other neighbors have done the same. It hurts to admit that my brother and sister haven't. But I'm so thankful for all the concern in all the ways it's been shown. And I truly appreciate every prayer and all the kind words from you guys.

I'm happy to hear that you've gotten numerous calls, texts and visits from your former church people. I am quite surprised that you haven't heard from the people you go to church with now or your brother and sister. Guess we never know who's going to show up when the chips are down

I'm actually not surprised about my brother...he really doesn't care about anyone. Long story. My sister and I aren't close, but I am a little hurt that she's only called me three times in four months. I do know I would have done a lot more for her if she had cancer.

This just proves you never know people until something bad happens and then they show their true spirit. Some care and some just say they care. I hope you're feeling well today.

Thanks, DE. I do feel a little stronger today. Just in time for treatment #2! But this too shall pass.

@1creekgirl I understand... I wish there was something doctors could use that targeted cancer directly instead of something that killed indiscriminately. (There is actually research being done on something that may do that but it is years from being ready to try on humans.) I wish you were through with all of this.

@DaddyEvil Chemo is such a double edged sword. Hopefully it's killing any little cancer cells that are floating around, but it doesn't discriminate between cancer and healthy cells. That's what killed my white blood cells and put me in the hospital for five days.

That is a sad truth about how genuine people can be. I have found that those who truly care are those who may have walked a mile in their shoes and can express empathy and understanding as a result. We have a very tight knit and genuine caring community here on the site, I am thankful for that, it is alot of good support regardless what we are challenged with.

@1creekgirl I have felt so much love and care when I post about difficult times, much less difficult than what you are living through.

@Juliaacv I don't know, we each have difficult times in life, just different. But I'm so thankful nothing is too hard for God to take care of.

It's in the difficult moments that we arrive to know who are our real friends and those who care. I know my brother would not care.

@1creekgirl - At least I know and I expect nothing from him. He has always been like that.

@LadyDuck My brother has always been like that, too. He was spoiled when he was little and never got over it.

I'm amazed that the people from your church are not showing any concern for you. I'm glad that the people from your old church are doing what God expects in times like these.

It has really hurt us. Not that I expected everyone to cater to us, but I know that if someone there had cancer, I'd be doing what I could for them. I just don't understand it. We're nice people, lol.

When you are down you always find out who your true friends are. I know that from experience. I would visit if we lived closer. Thoughts are always with you.

Sometimes it takes a crisis to find out who your friends truly are, and it isn't always who you think.

And it seems to be the people we didn't even know who cared. The sad part is people who should have, didn't.

Sorry to hear about your diagnosis. Is it treatable? I hope you caught it early enough. Sometime people plan on doing things but never follow through. I'm curious about your profile pic. We're you doing a reading or the sermon or sharing?

@1creekgirl that's great that the cancer is gone. I hope you do okay with the chemo and radiation. Does your husband preach much? We used to do a Bible fellowship in our home when my kids were small. We all took turns teaching back then. My main church is in Ohio, but no one in our area is currently doing a fellowship so we're attending a church of God that my brother and his family attends.

@MarshaMusselman The church we've been going to doesn't have a pastor, so my husband and three others rotate holding the service twice a month. We went to Church of God for many years when our kids were little.
