Have you ever heard of a tulip tree?

I had not. Today I learned that I have several tulip trees growing in my yard and woods. It has been a very blustery day today. This afternoon, when we were out playing with the dogs. We spotted several lovely blossoms like the one in the photo and wondered where they were coming from. Son2, who is visiting here with his girlfriend, took a photo and used Google Lens to find out what kind of flower it was. That's how we learned about tulip trees. Another name for the tulip tree is yellow poplar. I've known for years that we have an abundance of yellow poplar among our trees. I've also seen the blossoms before but never knew where they came from. Now, I know. Do you have tulip trees where you live?

I have heard of them, and even grew up around them! I don't think there are any in the area where I live now though.

Yes, tulip trees are common in my part of Missouri. They make a mess so I'm glad I don't have any on my property.

@DWDavis The flowers drop all over the place and make the yard look messy.

@DaddyEvil Thankfully, most of ours are in the woods next to the house and few of the flowers wind up in the yard when we have a stiff breeze like we did today.

I don't know about those trees being a Yellow Poplar. I do remember how glorious their pink blooms were in a northern area that I lived in years ago.

What I learned is that the Yellow Poplar is actually a member of the Magnolia family.

Absolutely I have heard of these. I have two beautiful Tulip Poplars in my backyard. They are over 40 feet tall now. Same blooms as you have in your hand.

I learned when I was reading about them that they are among the tallest of trees here in the east.

@DWDavis These two were planted here when we bought our home and they are my favorite shade trees. The birds enjoy the seeds inside the blooms.

Isn't it funny? I always picture Oregon as being heavily forested even though I know this is not the case.

I am not sure we have yellow poplars here in the area. Magnolia trees are in full bloom right now. As yellow flowers there are plenty of forsythia. This is a magnolia across the street from our home.

We call it poplar. I have poplars at my deck. The high winds today stripped about all the blossoms off the trees.

Yes we do have them here. They are beautiful!
