Almost had a kitchen fire. Make a plan if you don't have one!

I wasn't trying to copy Marga. Honest, I wasn't. I have a basic stove; the burners are those electric coils. It was brand new when I moved in here, almost 10 years ago. I am used to it now, and like many people, I have a ''favorite'' burner. So, it gets used pretty much every single day. Decided to heat up some soup last night for our dinner. I put the pot on the burner and turned it on 3, which is very low, it goes from 1-10. I do this often, no big deal. While it was heating, I washed some other pans I had been using. I heard a noise and glanced at the stove; the burner was SO red hot! It was pulsing with a life of it's own. I jerked the pot off the stove and turned off the burner, then I turned off the breaker to the stove. After it cooled down I removed the burner, it's the kind that plug in. Another burner should be here next week, but I won't be plugging it in until someone checks out the burner plug-in and makes sure it's all good to go. I still have 3 burners, so it's OK. It was just the handiest one, so I used it all the time. I have had an electric burner go bad on me before, but not for years and years. This one is completely worn out. Just a BIG reminder for anyone who has an electric stove--make SURE you know where your breaker box is, so if something goes crazy you can kill the power to your stove! If you have one, make sure the breakers are labeled. I am glad I did that when I moved in, it was worth the small effort it took. And yes, I have a handy fire extinguisher in my kitchen, just in case. I've never had to use it(knock on wood) it's there for emergencies, that's what matters. If you don't have one, they are not expensive, get one for the peace of mind.

I'm glad something made you look at the stove when you did! I wash any dishes while I'm cooking so am still close to the stove. Our breaker box is on the laundry room wall right behind the kitchen and all the plugs are labeled. I made sure of that when we moved in five years ago.

@MarieCoyle I've never had a stove do that. I'm sure it was startling.

It gives me peace of mind to know that the breakers are labeled in case anything ever goes crazy. Yes, I was still in the kitchen as I was washing some pans. Happened SO fast. That burner just overheated in seconds; I could not believe the amount of heat it put off in just no time at all.

I think we have a couple of them around the house. I have a more Mormon stove, with the glass top. No more coils for me.

I had the glass top type where I lived before. It wasn't my favorite, maybe because I had never had one, not sure.

@MarieCoyle I like it better than exposed coils. To each their own, though.

When I had one, I had one of the first ones that came out on the market. I think I got a lemon, it was never right somehow. I am sure now they make them better than that.

Good tip. I had a minor kitchen fire once with bacon...but other than burning part of a kitchen towel, the worst thing that happened was the smoke detectors were going crazy about 20 minutes. I do have some fire extinguishers more than one in the kitchen because I am not sure if they both work.

@snowy22315 My smoke detectors are wired in as well. I would have the same problem!

And those smoke detectors can be so loud! There is no ignoring them at all!

I also have a fire extinguisher in our kitchen, you never know, a moment of distraction and something really bad may happen.

@MarieCoyle An accident may happen even if we pay attention what we do.

We just recently had something similar happen in our kitchen, but it was the electric coil inside the oven that went haywire. My daughter was baking a chicken and the coil got so red hot that it was shooting lightning bolts all throughout the inside of the oven. That’s probably not the right term, but that’s the only way I can describe what it looked like. Thankfully my daughter thought quickly on her feet and killed the power to the oven. She also grabbed the fire extinguisher as well, but thankfully it wasn’t needed. When we looked in the oven later after it had cooled down, we could see white streaks all inside the oven where the electricity in the coil was arcing with the metal on the oven walls. Nothing like that has ever happened to me in my lifetime, but when we talked to the appliance service technician he said it’s fairly common for coils to go bad like that.

@MarieCoyle In all my years, this was the first time I had ever seen that happen. But after talking to a couple of appliance repair guys, they said it was fairly common.

@moffittjc I have never been completely in the dark on home repairs, but when I was married, usually the ex did them. Afterwards, I had to learn some things. When the heating element went out the first place I lived, I replaced it myself. I have fixed other things since then. If I get stuck, I use youtube! It helps a lot!

Yes, the coil in an electric oven often goes bad with no warning. My daughter turned her oven on once several years ago, stuck the food in there, and it did something similar--they had to kill the power and get a new heating element for it.

It's always good to have all safety measures and precautions in place. You never know when you might need it. Good that you could save the disaster and all is safe and good.

Yes, it is. Life is wild enough most of the time without adding in anything that I can possibly prevent.

I have had both gas and electric over the years. When I moved here, this place is all electric, no gas lines. And yes, we all need to be careful.

My family room and kitchen are of the open concept and so together in one big area. That is where I spend most of my time if I am home, and yes, it could have been very bad. Thank you, Eva.

Wow, so glad you got it put out in time! I almost did that recently and caught it before it caught fire. I had to promise Dale that I will never myLot and cook at the same time!

I was very close and I am very glad I was. I agree with Dale, I haven't ever done that but I can see it could be a problem.

Phew, glad you spotted that in time! I have never heard of that happening. But we had to get rid of our monster gas stove because it started going crazy. Now we have induction hobs so we have yet to find out what might go wrong with those!

Eventually, appliances or parts of them can just wear out or malfunction. I am really vigilant with my stove's upkeep, and check the burners regularly to make sure they are perfectly clean--if not, any food stuck to the burners can possibly ruin a pan or cause sparks. Yikes.

I have learned over the years to not panic for the most part. If I lose my cool, it won't help. Sometimes, it's hard not to.

We need to check our fire extinguisher. It's been in the kitchen for about 18 years. I"m glad you didn't have a fire. Have a good weekend.

What a scare you had! Something like this happened to my sister once when we were kids. A kitchen towel caught fire, we were very scared.

I couldn't believe how fast it overheated. It had to be less than a minute from the time I turned it on, until it totally went nuts. I guess it decided it had lived its life and that was it!
