I wrote about ‘love locks’ in my discussion about the Ha’penny Bridge in Dublin, Ireland. Love locks are padlocks fixed to some public bridge, gate or other structure symbolising the unbreakable love between two people. The names/initials/dates might be engraved on the locks.
Wikipedia says they date back at least 100 years. There is a lot of information on them in the article, too much to summarise here. For instance, the weight of the estimated 22,000 love locks on the Southgate footbridge in Melbourne, Australia, was causing the cables to sag.
The love locks in the photo are on a bridge in Paris. Hopefully you can see individual locks in the small photo which is supposed to be an inset but isn’t.

@RebeccasFarm I bet they never bother to go back and remove the padlocks.

I remember watching a movie (I think it was a Hallmark Movie) about the locks on the bridge in Paris.
Anna mentioned that the authorities have banned adding locks to the Paris bridge due to the structural damage they caused. It sounds like the bridge in Melbourne is in the same condition.

Love locks are too heavy. May cause problems.

I suppose so. I can't help wondering how many of these couples are still there - and do they remove the padlock if they break up?

It's a cute idea but can be dangerous when there is too many of them
