Stick a Fork in Me, I’m Done

Bad luck comes in threes, and I thought I might have gotten off easy with the third thing being my car's battery giving out. Oh, no. No, I did not. Because the third thing actually seems to be my car's transmission. I'm so mad that the shop I took it to yesterday identified the problem so quickly. Apparently it was really freaking obvious and there's pretty much no excuse for the other shops I've taken it to missing the issue every other time I've had it looked at for the sporadic clunking noise. This place is definitely getting our business going forward. On the bright side of things, the timing is actually really good. We can juggle one vehicle until the kids are out of school at the end of the month. I made it past the gauntlet of the recorded video interview and have an in-person interview on Monday that's probably just a formality. Another income stream will definitely help with financing. Plus the local Nissan dealership extended their cash for clunkers program until the end of the month, and that might be the best option for parting with the old car. Guess I'm not as set on another Corolla as I thought I was.

@yukimori The dealerships here will even go tow the car in for you with no charge... No reason to "waste" on of your tows from AAA. I've seen videos online where the axel and wheel come off the car. Thankfully, the ones I saw weren't going very fast at the time.

@DaddyEvil Yeah, what prompted me to get the car into that shop was actually seeing a car on the side of the road with a very obviously broken driver's side axel. I thought the problem might be a ball joint; before this the shops I took it to said it was just the skid plate banging around on the underside of the vehicle because it was missing some of the fasteners. I'm not too worried about wasting tows, but I'll definitely ask them about that. I want to have it out of the shop's lot by this evening so worst case I'll just have it towed home. That might work better because my husband wants to pull the aftermarket radio out before we trade it.

No, definitely not all bad. It's working out weirdly well in our favor, actually.

Wow, that is sad. I know I got a transmission replaced one time, and it was like 900.00 this was years ago too, God only knows what it would be now. YOu are smart to get a new vehicle.

The transmission issue was kind of just the last straw. There's a lot of other issues that I was going to need to address, too. The manager at the shop flat out told me that it's not worth repairing at this point and wouldn't bother giving me a quote on the work needed. I priced it online and it's at least $2000.

It's toast, unfortunately. Between the transmission and the other repairs it would have needed soon it's more than the car is worth.

I think they might be. I'm actually going over to the Nissan dealership tomorrow to put a deposit down on the next Versa they have coming in, so we might have everything fully sorted sometime next week.

Oh, fantastic! It's so great when bad luck comes in threes, isn't it? First the battery, then the transmission - what's next? Your house catching on fire? Losing your job? The possibilities are endless! But hey, at least you found a shop that actually knows what they're doing. And who needs a reliable car when you can participate in a cash for clunkers program and get a sweet deal on a brand new ride? Who cares about being set on a certain car model, anyway? Just roll the dice and see what you end up with, it's all about the thrill of the unknown, right? :p
