It looks like we might have some severe weather today. I’ll get my groceries (time for more infamous potato soup!) and get home before it hits. But you’re going to get some music before that happens, so let’s go back 50 years for another great song from 1973.
I’m Just a Singer (In a Rock and Roll Band) - Moody Blues
Hey, it’s my brother’s favorite band! And it’s pretty rare for a song of that time: it’s a protest song. By 1973 most of the protest songs had faded (as the Eagles later said in “The Sad Cafe,” “we thought we could change the world with words like love and freedom”).
And this isn’t really that much of a protest song as it is an affirmation of the power of music (“a thousand pictures can be drawn from one word”). People mourned Gordon Lightfoot’s passing last week because of the impact his songs made on their lives. The way that music can touch and move an individual is very real.
The beauty and majesty of the Moodies’ song “Question” is a great example. I still get goosebumps when I hear the slow middle of that song. And the B-side of this single, “For My Lady”? Wow, what a love song.
So don’t tell these guys they’re just singers. Indeed.
I’m Just a Singer (In a Rock and Roll Band)
Written by John Lodge
Recorded by the Moody Blues
From Seventh Sojourn, 1972

There was a much greater variety of music back then, for certain!

I’m glad you enjoyed it. It wasn’t a big hit in Europe for them, but it was here in America.

Didn't have any light bulb moments with this one. Not familiar with it.

Ah, a song I used in my (rock) weapon-titled song quiz
And a favorite of mine as is all of the Moody's work. And to top it off I saw them in concert way back in the day. What a treat!
It took a Moody's Seventh Sojourn to finally give this wonderful concept band their due in America with this album hitting #1 in 1972.

Glad you enjoy it! I don’t think it gets the airplay it used to, but then again, I don’t listen to the radio anymore.
