Shown in the photo is the Order of St Patrick, a British order of chivalry. This was on display in Dublin Castle which we toured when we were holidaying in Ireland.
King George III instituted the Order in 1783 to reward loyal Irish peers during the American War of Independence. The award in no longer given and the last surviving knight, Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester, died in 1974.
The star is an eight-pointed figure. The centre of the gold badge depicts a shamrock bearing three crowns. The Latin motto ‘Quis separabit’ and the Roman numerals ‘MDCCLXXXIII’ are written on the blue circle.

Yes, it does. All those decorations must add up to quite a bit of weight sometimes.

I think so too. I doubt I'd have any occasion to wear it though.
