Shown in the photo is the Order of St Patrick, a British order of chivalry. This was on display in Dublin Castle which we toured when we were holidaying in Ireland. King George III instituted the Order in 1783 to reward loyal Irish peers during the American War of Independence. The award in no longer given and the last surviving knight, Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester, died in 1974. The star is an eight-pointed figure. The centre of the gold badge depicts a shamrock bearing three crowns. The Latin motto ‘Quis separabit’ and the Roman numerals ‘MDCCLXXXIII’ are written on the blue circle.

That looks so nice. I would love to have something like that for my pendant but maybe a bit smaller in size

@JudyEv I like this brooch. In the UK, a brooch is usually a sign that someone has been made "part of the Royal Family".

All I can think is how few young people know Roman numerals anymore!

What an ornate piece. I wonder why Prince Richard, Duke of Gloucester was never knighted, I'll have to look into that, this is fascinating.

Yes, it does. All those decorations must add up to quite a bit of weight sometimes.

Never seen anything like it. And it sure is interesting to know the symbolism behind the design.
