Today is a sad day for me

It was on this day last year that my dad passed away. I can’t believe that a year already passed. It’s so surreal. He was only 70 when he left us. He didn’t get to celebrate his birthday that year as it’s in June. Seventy is too young to go. He should still be here... I never imagined that my dad would pass away in a hospital chained to a ventilator. I always hoped that when his time came it would be at home in his own bed, just like his mom. Wishful thinking. There will be a lot of people at the gravestone unveiling this Friday. Gonna be an emotional day.

@kaylachan It is very touching that so many people are coming for the gravestone unveiling and the dinner after. Close to 40 people.

My dad passed away at the age of 65 when I was in my late twenties. My husband passed away at the age of 71. Eternal separations are always painful.

Yeah. Even though it is inevitable the pain isn’t any less when people we love leave us.

I believe that experiencing the sadness of losing a loved one is a universal emotion. It is never easy to handle, especially if you were there when the person passed away. When I lost my mother in 2013, which was almost precisely 10 years ago, I was also in that circumstance at the time. Time went by so quickly, and every time I read something like this, I'm reminded of how painful it is to recall them.

@lovebuglenaGiven that it was early in the morning, I was not by her side. My sister took over the vigil the previous night as I had made the decision to sleep at home. Me and my father were home at the time because it happened quite early in the morning. Simply said, it is incredibly depressing to think that she was in excellent spirits the night before we went, but only a few hours later, she was already gone..

I was not next to him when he passed away: it would’ve been harder to handle probably if I had been there at that moment.

@rsa101 It is really devastating when a person we care about is fine one minute and the next things go downhill and the person leaves us.

Sorry to know about your father. Two years ago my father in law also passed away and the doctor told it was because of pneumunia. He was discharged from the hospital once and the things were going well but after few days the things started getting worse and he was admitted to the hospital again. He was on the ventilator and passed away in a day.

@sjvg1976 That is terrible. Things can take a turn for the worse, especially when a person ends up in the hospital.

All we can of is try to move on from the pain. Sometimes it’s ok but sometimes the sadness hits.

Thank you! I remember when one of the doctors called my mom and told her to come quick because my dad was going to leave us that day. We didn't make it by 15 minutes. Losing your father at such a young age has to be very tough.

Thank you! It is still surreal at times that he is no longer here. I had his phone saved in my favorites on my iPhone. I removed it from there as there is no one to call anymore. Plus, we cancelled his number. And seeing it in my favorites at times got me down.

I spoke to my dad earlier in the day that he ended up in the hospital and he sounded fine, like nothing was wrong with him. And then later in the day he had trouble breathing... He ended up in the hospital and that was his end. Over a month of suffering on a ventilator only to never come back home.

I'm so sorry, Lena. 70 is still young; and it's a shame that your father passed away. I hope that the gravestone unveiling goes well and that it provides some sense of closure and comfort for you and your family.

Sorry for your loss! We all have an expiration date but it doesn’t make it any easier when our loved ones pass away.
