Goodbye sunflower...

I'm visiting friends in a place where sunflowers abound in the campus where I stay. Even the sunflowers that have completed their life cycle and are fading away look pretty! I didn't realised that there was so much intricate patterns and designs in the centre! I need to have a closer look today.

We had sunflowers at one of my childhood homes. We used to stand there and eat sunflower seeds before the birds got them all!

Sunflowers are beautiful, I keep the seeds to give to the birds.

@pitstop - Yes, I always seed some to have seeds for the birds.

I used to have a friend in high school that adorned her bedroom in sunflower decorations. She really loved them.

I wonder if they have a smell that is pleasant.

@pitstop I don’t recall a strong fragrance, but if I remember correctly they had a very pleasant smell; fit for a prairie.

The seeds are just beginning to ripen but that won't happen until the flower is dried up. Those seeds can also be eaten by either people or birds.

There are plenty of birds here - they probably get the first pick.

Birds generally wait until the flower center is dry because that is when the seeds are easier to pick out of the hull.

It took us ages to get a photo of a field of sunflowers in France. Every time we came across them, they were facing the sun and had their heads turned away from us.

That must have been frustrating. I'll see tomorrow if the little group of sunflowers face the sun in the daytime.

@pitstop The flower heads are supposed to follow the sun around.
