Proteas are popular in Western Australia

I was given a lovely bunch of flowers that other day by some friends who came for lunch. I didn’t take a photo at the time and even this protea is past its best but aren’t proteas just the prettiest flowers? Proteas are native to South Africa but closely related to Australian natives such as the banksias, grevilleas and waratahs. They grow well in Western Australia and have become popular as a cut flower. These evergreen plants are tough and hardy, thrive in poor soils and the plants are tolerant of a wide range of temperatures.

I don't think they're pretty at all... But, at least they thrive in Australia. I can see liking/loving what you're able to grow in the soils where you live.

I can't believe I didn't check. I'm not sure they come in pink though like mine. And yes, they do look a bit like an artichoke.

Oh that's Gorgeous!! So this is the flower after which the South Africans(especially the cricket team for me)is called ! And well this Western Aussie and Protea - South Africa connection becomes all the more interesting due to the intense cricket rivalry between Australia and South Africa. I don't think that Australia and South Africa would have such an intense rivalry and contests in other games and sports like Hockey, Tennis or Football. Rugby may be, but I am not sure!

I think the advice was that they don't like high humidity so that would rule out at least parts of your country.

I'm sorry about the lack of a photo. It's there now. They look very much like some of our banksias.

@Tampa_girl7 I'm not sure if dye has been added to make it a pink colour.

I remember I received a bouquet of flowers and there was a proteas in it, so I suppose they grow in some European countries ot too far from us.

The flowers might have been imported. They can move stuff so quickly sometimes.
