Hi from “the other side of the river.” My sis-in-law is having her lungs scoped today, so I’m eating at “the other” Chuy’s. Here’s a song to get you (and me) through a rainy day (it’s raining here), or a sunny day, or any day. Presenting the next tune that’s now 50 years old. Shambala - Three Dog Night Every time I mention Three Dog Night I say that they’re one of the best cover bands in history. Yeah, that’s all they did: covers. That includes this song. This was originally recorded by B.W. Stevenson, of “My Maria” fame. “My Maria” songwriter Daniel Moore wrote this one, too. Stevenson didn’t do the “ah-ah-ooohs” (he sang “ay-ee-yay”), and it pronounced it sham instead of shom. Do you really need to know that? Nah, just enjoy one of the great songs of Three Dog Night’s career, and of the 70s. Shambala Written by Daniel Moore Recorded by Three Dog Night From Cyan, 1973 Wash away my troubles:

I saw former Three Dog Night member Chuck Negron with the Turtles Happy Together tour a few year ago. He could still sing pretty well. Performed "One," "Joy to the World" and I think "Easy to be Hard." Same he had that heroin addiction leading to his being kicked out of the band. They had so many hits which filled AM radio back then.

I wish they’d put them in the Hall of Fame. I mean, we lost two people this month who should be there (Gordon Lightfoot and the Smiths’ Andy Rourke); plus, two 3DN members (Cory Wells and Jimmy Greenspoon) have already passed…so what are they waiting for?

@FourWalls Gord is not in? A travesty I don't pay much attention to their selections anymore. It's too political! Are we choosing on influence and craft or a popularity contest or purely record sales. Plus, the inclusion factor (just my opinion). Anyway, Three Dog should definitely be included in the HOF. I know they didn't write their own hit stuff, but other artists have gotten in that didn't.

@dgobucks226 — Gord was put in the Canadian Music Hall of Fame a long time ago, and I think that one mattered more than anything the bozos in Cleveland might or might not have done.

My late mother’s favorite musical acts ever were the Carpenters, and Three Dog Night. I remember her trying to compare how popular they were to a band I was familiar with from my day. But she didn’t know anyone from my generation well enough to compare them to Three Dog Night. This might seem like an odd question, but you seem to know everything about musicians. Do you remember pianist, Joanne Castle?

@FourWalls Yes! My mom absolutely loved her, and would play her records when I was a child.

Jo Ann Castle from The Lawrence Welk Show? Played kind of a Del Wood-style ragtime/honky tonk piano? The thing about Three Dog Night is that they were popular for a prolonged period. In the 80s, we’d have band that’d have a #1 hit then disappear (e.g., the Human League).

I had not known that B.W. Stevenson's version came out first. I love this song and have the record by Stevenson that it's on.

It was neck and neck but BW’s version was released first.

@FourWalls Three Dog Night was a "background" to my late childhood days. I may have had a couple of their 45s.

Love the name 'Three Dog Night'. Not quite so keen on this song but you can't win 'em all.

Supposedly a reference to a very cold night in Alaska, sleeping with three dogs to keep you warm. We’ll try again tomorrow to see if you like one.

@FourWalls We used to say this about the indigenous people here. Whether it was a two-dog or three-dog night.

As always I learn so much from your posts. And this series I am also having flashbacks to the groovy clothing attire of the 70s

I saw a video of Gordon Lightfoot on Soundstage and he was wearing bell bottoms. Yeah, that’ll give you a headache. But at least our music was great, even if the clothes kinda sucked.

I hope the procedure goes well for your sister-in-law. Love this song. A good toe tapper. I see they are still touring. Amazing. So many good songs.

She’s in the procedure as we speak. (Well, type. ) That’s why I love doing these 59 year old lists…shows the incredible longevity of these classics.

@FourWalls I am blown away to see some of these still going. I am slowing down and they are still doing what they enjoy.
