Dear Montana, WTF.

Sooooo, there has been a ton of controversy surrounding the popular social media website TikTok. There have been whispers about it getting banned...yadda...yadda....yadda. But I guess Montana actually went a step further and the Govenor actually signed a bill yesterday that will go into effect at the start of the new year which BANS people living in Montana of using TikTok. The punishments if you are found using TikTok within state lines after it goes into effect include fines of ten thousand dollars a day. As soon as I read this article, the only thing I could think of was that this ban violates rights as an American. Like honestly what is Montana thinking. What do you think of an individual state banning it's residents from using Tik Tok, or any social media platform?

I understood when states banned TikTok from government devices. I think most of us did. But for Montana to ban it completely is embarrassing. It’s getting them deservedly mocked. Maybe in 20 years I’ll be proven wrong, but I doubt it.

@thislittlepennyearns Amen. They’re becoming what they claim they’re fighting.

@AmbiePam of course they are. "You either die the hero, or you live long enough to see yourself become the villian." That line from Batman echos in my mind often when thinking of the government.

I get the government devices ban. I know a lot of military families that are banned from using social media because of safety. But for the general public, I think it is completely stupid, embarassing and rediculous.

I wonder how they are going to enforce it. Are they going to be monitoring all the internet activity in the State? These days it is very easy to hide your location online

That's what I was thinking. They can still use TikTok if they just use a VPN or similar to hide where they are accesing it from.

@thislittlepennyearns I don't TikTok, but this kind of blanket legislation makes me uncomfortable

I think it's stupid for a state to try to take away rights by banning an app.

I wish Montana good luck in trying to enforce the ban. It seems more symbolic than practical. But China bans most US social media sites. And there is a good chance that China is using TikTok for nefarious purposes. If nothing else, think of all the TikTok challenges that are killing and injuring young people all over the country. Though, in truth, I suppose that says more about foolish young people here in the US than it does about the Chinese.

Thankfully Australia doesn't have 50 states but some of our individual decisions come under fire from time to time too. There has been talk about TikTok over here but I must admit I haven't paid much attention.

I don't agree with it. Let the app ban people who can't behave, but otherwise, Montana shouldn't dictate what social media apps people use.

And they said on our news that Montana expects the app stores to block it so it can't be downloaded there

Wow, that is ridiculous for sure!
