Sis-in-law is doing well. Thanks again, y’all. The next three days will show you just how diverse the year 1973 was musically. After that, it’s top ten time, and yet more diversity. Let’s have another song that’s now half a century old.
Top of the World - Carpenters
Welcome to “which came first.” This is one of those weird ones. Richard Carpenter co-wrote this, so obviously it’s a Carpenters song. However, Lynn Anderson covered it and her version was the first actual single release of the song. Then the Carpenters’ rendition, which doesn’t sound that far removed from the Lynn Anderson version, was released and became a top five hit. I can’t find the session information for Anderson’s album, but it’s possible that Buddy Emmons played steel on both versions!
Of course, Lynn Anderson was a great singer, but this rendition has Karen Carpenter’s voice, and that’s all it needs. Dang, that woman could sing. I didn’t agree with all their cover selections (really, Richard, covering Klaatu’s “Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft”??????), but they always had Karen’s voice to fall back on.
What a voice.
Top of the World
Written by Richard Carpenter and John Bettis
Recorded by the Carpenters
From A Song for You, 1973
A pleasing sense of happiness for me:

Karen Carpenter's voice was simply incredible. Gone way, way too soon.

I think we saw her in concert 3-4 times. Like I said, we were really impressed by her voice--that tiny body belting out such a sound was unreal!
I wish she had as well. It always seemed as if her mother brushed off her problems and it made it worse.

So true. What an impact she made in just 12 years, so you can only guess at what it would have been.

I love this song. In fact, my friend and I sang it during a singing contest in high school and we won. I love Karen's voice, it was so smooth, bouncy, and awesome! This is also a favorite song during karaoke sessions even up to now, because it is easy to sing and is very lively, Everyone can sing along.

Congratulations on the victory! You’re quite right about it being easy to sing. Karen wasn’t into “vocal gymnastics” the way a lot of modern singers (especially female singers)) are.

I think she had a splendid first name.

And so tragically…a victim of a false opinion of her body image.

I do, too. You look at this list of songs through the month and you see Alice Cooper, ZZ Top, and other “hard rock” things, and then you have the Carpenters. What a diverse time for music: truly something for everyone, and it’s still good to listen to!

Glad that your sister in law is doing well
I love Lynn Anderson (especially her Christmas Album) but can't beat the Carpenters either

Yeah, “Ding-a-Long the Christmas Bell” is a great song.
Thanks for the kind words about my SIL.
