Okay, so was the Carpenters song a little “too pop” for you? How about some southern rock!!!!! That’s the thing about 1973: there was something for everybody on the charts (as this monthlong look at these songs turning 50 proves). And great album cuts, too! So let’s “turn it up” and listen to a great song.
Tuesday’s Gone - Lynyrd Skynyrd
CONGRATULATIONS to Al Kooper, who produced Skynyrd’s first three albums, for his induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame!!! Lynyrd Skynyrd has been there since they were eligible, and for good reason: they are the kings of the mountain of southern rock. Not the first, not the last, but the most enduring. and, let’s face it, there was a time when you couldn’t go to a concert (even a bluegrass show) without some smart aleck yelling for “Free Bird.”
Well, this song is from that album, but Skynyrd was a whole lot more than just Sweet Home Alafreebird. So I’m using this one instead of the “obvious” song.
Look what they accomplished in just four years, between this album and the plane crash that took the lives of lead singer and primary lyricist Ronnie Van Zant, Steve Gaines, and Cassie Gaines. As the title of their third album says, it was “Nothin’ Fancy,” but man, was it good.
Tuesday’s Gone
Written by Ronnie Van Zant and Allen Collins
Recorded by Lynyrd Skynyrd
From Pronounced 'Leh-'nérd 'Skin-'nérd, 1973

They always got a lot of airplay in Florida, being from Jacksonville. Always more than Sweet Home Alafreebird, too.

@FourWalls I'd have to hear the CSN song. Crosby and Garcia were buddies.

That was typical of songs back then. Ever looked at the length of an Elton John song?
And “Free Bird” is nine minutes long!

Don't know this one. What? No ELO, Earth Wind & Fire...no Brick House?

Wow! From the girl who played the Tom Tom, to a Southern Rock tune. Using my best southern accent, I've got to say, "Heaven's to Betsy."
That Carpenters song was too "top-sy" turvy for me, so had to skip that one, lol.
One of my favorite Southern Rockers to listen too! Great pick

I understand. Not everybody can go from the Clash to the Carpenters.
I love using Skynyrd stuff to prove they really did record more than sweet home alafreebird.

Lynyrd Skynyrd was a favorite singer, the song Sweet Home Alabama:) What's the scoop, all these famous people dying in plane crashes?

who could forget the infamous "Free Bird" requests at concerts? It's like a rite of passage for any band. But let's not overlook the depth and breadth of Skynyrd's music beyond the hits. They truly were the kings of southern rock, and their accomplishments in just four years were remarkable.

The “Free Bird” joke has worn thin. I haven’t been to a concert in nearly five years but I’d probably hear someone scream it if I went to one tomorrow. Regardless of the genre.
