To round out the monthlong countdown of songs that are now 50 years old, I’ll give you my ten favorites from the year 1973. Great songs, a great year, and you’re probably thinking, “wow, those songs are that old?” Not old, TIMELESS! Let’s get the top ten rolling.
#10: Angie - The Rolling Stones
And this song presents one of the other really GREAT things about music back then: the myths!!! For eons and ages and decades it was “common knowledge” that this song was about Angelia Bowie, David Bowie’s then-wife. Uh….no. Just a name they picked. (Although, apparently, a name Keith liked, because that’s what he named his daughter, who was born around the time they recorded the song.)
Mick had someone not named “Angie” in mind: Marianne Faithful, whom he’d been dating for four years.
It doesn’t really matter who “Angie” is, the song is a winner.
Angie
Written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards
Recorded by The Rolling Stones
From Goats Head Soup, 1973

You myth buster you! I liked that story. lol. A very untypical song for the Stones. I find it similar to Wild Horses in tempo a song I like a lot. Anyway, the tune worked hitting #1 in the U.S.

I love “Wild Horses” so much. In fact, it was #2 on my list of favorite Stones songs, behind “Before They Make Me Run.”

@FourWalls Graham Parsons and The Flying Burrito Bros. covered this tune as did Susan Boyle. How's that for a dichotomy of musical styles.

You’re about to get three in a row that you won’t know….and probably won’t like! Hang tough, kiddo.

Starts out in a Stones song, ends up in a Helen Reddy song!

I’m not a big fan, but you couldn’t escape their music on the radio in the 70s.

It’s a gorgeous ballad, by anyone’s standard. To come from the Stones, though…wow!

Something they serve in Louisiana with head cheese, I’m guessing.
