Ten pounds of rice

I have frozen orange chicken from Trader Joe’s at home. Usually I eat it with basmati rice. I don’t have enough rice to make this so I went to the Turkish store to buy some. The smallest size I found was a 10-pound bag. What the heck am I supposed to do with that much rice? I obviously didn’t buy it. Now I have to see where else I can get it. Maybe my Russian store sells it in smaller packages and for a good price. I won’t buy it if it’s expensive. It is weird though. The Turkish store had regular rice or even long grain and jasmine rice in smaller packages. So why not basmati?

I am assuming their customers buy up the bigger sizes of basmati because they eat lots of it (although I don't know much about the Turkish menu). We eat a lot of rice, so I tend to buy the bigger sizes too . . . but I know not all are rice freak like us . Isn't the TJ one like 3 pounds?

@lovebuglena If you were close by, I would gladly give you some of our rice (take your pick - we probably have all the varieties). I just checked TJs - it's 2 pounds - that'd last us only a couple meals .

@much2say Depending on how much I make for hubby and me for one meal. I try to do slightly less than a cup.

I am not sure how much the Trader Joe's one is but it is not huge. We were actually in the store recently and I forgot to get rice because I thought we still have a lot. Maybe I will ask hubby to drive me there so I can get it. The Turkish store had other rice in huge sizes as well. But it was also in small packs too. I looked over the shelves twice thinking I may have missed the basmati rice but didn't see it.

@RebeccasFarm I guess if you got room for it and it can stay a long time without going stale or bad then great.

May be the customers of that store consume a very large quantity of Basmati rice. Most Turkish dishes with rice requires Basmati rice.

@lovebuglena Basmati is an expensive rice, may be that bought in large bags is a lot less expensive. I usually buy the "Uncle Ben" Basmati and it's expensive, but right now it's unavailable, I had to buy another brand.

Maybe that is it. Still doesn’t make sense to only have the huge size. It’s not like it’s a store that only sells stuff in bulk.

@lovebuglena We sell bulgur in my local grocery store. I see it every time I shop, but have no idea what it is and what it is used for. But it is located by the flour.

@moffittjc it’s a grain. It’s a great side dish to go along with meat or fish. I like to add sautéed onions to it after I boil it. And if I have mushrooms I sauté and add them as well.

Were you able to find your rice somewhere else?

@LindaOHio We had 1/2 cup of rice left. Since I am doing two cobs of corn that I will remove from the cob and will mix it with rice and broccoli it should be enough I think to go along with the frozen orange chicken.

A friend scored a bunch of rice and gave me way, way too much. 10 pounds each of Basmati and Jasmine. I put it in 2 glass gallon jars with some bay leaves to keep it fresh...we will get through it, but we do have enough rice for quite some time!

I did not know about putting bay leaves into uncooked rice.

20 pounds of rice is a lot of carbs.

@lovebuglena I am hoping my daughter is in need of rice so I can share. I am careful about how many carbs I eat in a day.

I guess they REALLY want to move that rice! No, I have no idea. I wish we had a Trader Joe’s around here.

By car it’s super close. If I go there alone via buses it takes a while.

Did you ask them why they did not have the rice you wanted in a smaller bag.

I did not. Perhaps I should've done so. Maybe they had it somewhere else and I did not see it.

That is a lot of rice. Since I live alone; I would not buy that much rice at one time.

It’s just two of us and I still don’t want that much rice in the house. We don’t eat it that often.

We never buy rice in small bag or in a smaller kilos. We always buy a sack of Jasmine rice.
