Q of the Day- Who is the Coolest Sea Animal in Your Opinion? I Know Mine...

There are a lot of "cool" sea life in and around the World's oceans, like Sharks, Beluga Whales, Emperor Penguins, and Dolphins, but after reading about this particular creature, I'd have to give it my vote. What got my curiosity about sea animals? Well, I noticed that "World Otter Day" is June 1st, and they are definitely a "cool" species. Here are a couple of Otter facts you may not know. *There are 13 species of Otters and there are types found all over the world in oceans, lakes, streams or rivers. *Otters are waterproof because they have two layers of fur which insulates them. *Otters are uniquely skilled at eating shellfish. They use rocks to open them on their bellies. Now how's that for cracking up a meal in a "nutshell!" Pretty cool, but Otters are not my pick. Nope, I'm going with "Seahorses" and here's why. *They are incurable romantics mating for life and doing a ritualistic greeting dance each morning for their mate, twisting and twirling around for up to an hour. *Their size. Seahorses range in size from 1 foot to 1 inch. Tom Thumb has nothing on them, *They are terrible swimmers due to their fin structure, but in spite of that they are successful hunters with a kill rate of 90 percent. Seahorses use camouflage to blend into their surroundings and surprise their prey. *Seahorses have some "cool anatomy." Their head shape allows them to move silently through the water and in any direction (forward, backward, up and down). *Finally, they look "cool." They have an armor like body, flexible tails for hitching a ride on sea vegetation, and a shape of a horse. What's better than that! So, I challenge you to name a "cooler sea animal" and what makes them better? Source: oceanconservatory.com Photo- Seahorse

Otters have always been at the top of my list. But is is also hard to beat a seahorse for cuteness. Always loved the otters, penguins and dolphins but gotta go with seahorse for being unique too.

@dgobucks226 That is very true. Funny with the bluebirds, the female builds the nest while the male stands guard.

@dgobucks226 I knew none of these facts. Thank you once again for the information. I did know about the male seahorses. That is incredible.

@RebeccasFarm Seals have such cute innocent looking faces don't they. It is a shame they were preyed upon by hunters some to extinction. And whales, sharks and Orcas. So sad...

You didn't mention that although the females lay the eggs its the males that incubate and raise them. How many dads can do that? There are far too many sea creatures that are awesome, I could never choose just one.

Ha, ha. I did find that out and was going to mention it in my additional comments. Thanks for the additional info. Another reason for a Seahorses coolness! Another Otter fact since we got the seahorse covered: A group of sea otters resting together in the water is called a raft. Otters actually link arms while sleeping so as not to drift away from the group. Now that's cool too!

@dgobucks226 I have a question since in a way they seem similar are otters related to ferrets, I cannot seem to find the answer,

Another one similar to otters in behavior and sometimes confused with them are beavers. But no relation. Another Otter fact: Although playful Otters do not make good pets. A group of sea otters resting together in the water is called a raft. Otters actually link arms while sleeping so as not to drift away from the group.

@RasmaSandra Yes, one source I found said they both come the Mustelidae family. However, not as closely related. Kind of like distant cousins, lol.

And seahorses come in a variety of colors. From common white and yellow seahorses to the more exotic pink and purple seahorses. Some seahorses have black stripes running down their back, while others have dots on their skin. Another Seahorse fact: Male Seahorses are the ones who bear the pregnancy after the female lays her eggs into his sac-like pouch. You could consider them for Father of the Year in the sea world. Now that's cool!

@dgobucks226 Thank you for sharing the amazing facts about seahorses since the only time I remember seeing a seahorse was in the Aquaman cartoons of the 1960s.

Otters are fun and crafty too. River Otters will use abandoned beaver dams for protection and raising their young. Now that's being an opportunist! Another Otter fact: A group of sea otters resting together in the water is called a raft. Otters actually link arms while sleeping so as not to drift away from the group.

@dgobucks226 Cool facts. We saw otters in the wild when we went out to the west coast. They were floating on their backs near the aquarium. (Can't remember the city in California.)

I would pick a seahorse also because the daddies are the ones that give birth. I mean, how much cooler does it get?

Yes, exactly! A rarest of traits. Who would have thought that possible? Another Sea Horse fact: Seahorses mate for life which allows for multiple reproduction cycles and successful procreation over time. Male Seahorses are the ones who bear the pregnancy after the female lays her eggs into his sac-like pouch. You could consider them for Father of the Year in the sea world. lol

I was watching old home movies of our vacations, and one of them (1965) had my brother and me in a boat, and he was holding on to Flipper’s tail (as in the star of the TV show Flipper) while she (yes, Flipper was really a female dolphin named Mitzi) pulled the boat around. So I’ll go with the dolphin or porpoise, whichever.
