Today is pulmonary day. As if that wildfire smoke isn’t causing enough problems, they’re gonna pinch off my nose then tell me to “breathe normal.” Of course, I always want to say “normally, ya dip.” Never mind that, you’re here for a song that’s 40 years old now, and I’m happy to oblige! In a Big Country - Big Country Since I was obviously watching a different MTV than the rest of the world I’ll wait for the “never heard of it” comments. Big Country hailed from Scotland, and they’re still around, 40 years after their biggest hit. The last 22 have been without Stuart Adamson, the lead singer and co-writer of this song. He committed suicide in 2001. They did do other songs (“Fields of Fire” did get MTV airplay), honestly, but this is what they’re remembered for. And what a good song to be remembered for! In a Big Country Written by Stuart Adamson, Mark Brzezicki, Tony Butler, and Bruce Watson Recorded by Big Country From The Crossing, 1983 I’m not expecting to grow flowers in the desert:

I knew Stuart Adamson. Actually his name was William. He was with the Skids ( that's when I met him) before he formed Big Country. Also I don't think he was born in Scotland. I hate to say this but I think he was actually from South of the Border.

Yes, he was born in Manchester, England. I’m so sorry he couldn’t “stay alive” like this song says.

@JimBo452020 — that’s true. Two of the three Bee Gees are gone after singing “Stayin’ Alive.”

I say that about a lot of fashion trends through the decades. A long time ago I posted a video of Gordon Lightfoot on my Facebook page and asked people to ignore his bellbottoms.

That's so sad that these relatively young people can't cope with life.

And the pressures of fame don’t help, either.

I’ve used this one a number of times before, including for my favorite one-hit wonders of the 80s.
