It's tough to be an optimist

Nowadays, I am finding it hard to be an optimist. I seem to think the worst of situations, and suspect persons of their true motives. There were some events that proved my negative thoughts were unfounded. I'm thinking, perhaps, it's because I'm old and had lost my fighting spirit? I don't know. Some say, as you grow older, you gain wisdom, and I find this to be true, but it stopped at a certain point. And now, I'm slowly drifting back to being a pessimist. I don't think I need to consult a psychiatrist though. What about you? What do you do when you're feeling down?

For me it is just the other way around I have learnt to pick positive situations in every challenge I face It took me time and now I am happy I have reached there You too will. All what you have to do is to look at situations and imagine what it would be if it was worse than what it is - that is one way There are other ways too

Thank you for the suggestion. These are good and wise pieces of advice. I know these too, but I am just too "lazy" or unmotivated to do them. But I will keep trying. Take care.

@Jenaisle It is a one time effort and when done you will have a spring in your step And I suppose you know time is a diffuser. Facing a challenge after waiting for a while has advantages.

I suppose you should talk to a doctor about it if it persists long enough to interfere with your ability to do normal activities. I've been dealing with the same issue for the past few months. I felt strange, depressed, and anxious, and my blood pressure would always increase for no apparent reason. I had it checked, and while there was nothing physically wrong with me, it persisted, so I chose to consult to see if I might be having mental health problems. And I did, in fact, experience six of the nine symptoms. To be diagnosed with depression with anxiety illness, only 5 symptoms are required.

@Jenaisle My sleep was the first thing to improve. I was already able to sleep through the night. I believe that's what contributed to my mental instability. Even though these episodes still occasionally occur, they are now manageable. My doctor keeps me under monitoring once a month. When you have someone to talk to about how you are feeling or what you are worried about, who won't pass judgment and will simply listen to you out, it helps a lot with things that you can't convey to others because they wouldn't get it.

@rsa101 I'm glad you could sleep soundly now. Yes, sleep deprivation could cause mental issues. Now, that you've said it, My insufficient sleep may have affected my mental state too. I sleep 5 hours only almost every day and even less than that on certain days. I guess, I have to sleep more. And I can't talk to anyone here, as the oldest in the family. My hubby is stationed in another city because of business. I could only air my troubles here on MyLot. Is it worth washing my dirty linen in public? hahaha Thanks again, for reminding me to sleep well. God bless.

I'm interested in those 9 symptoms. It happens now and then and not very often, Hence, I consider it as just a phase I'm going through. Perhaps, because of hormonal changes in my body. However, your recommendation is well accepted. If I don't pull myself out of this condition, I will try to consult an expert. I hope you're doing well now, and that things have improved in your life. Thanks and have a nice day.

When I feel down I go for a nice hike in the mountains. Walking is relaxing to me.

I know how that feels. It's good if we have a safe trail to walk through here but we don't have one. I could walk inside the church's parking lot with my grandkid in a stroller, but it is not enough. I wish we have a park with a walking trail or space in it. Thanks for this good suggestion. I need this one too. Take care.

@jstory07 That's wonderful. I wish I were there. We have one mountain/park here with hiking trails but it is an hour's ride from my place.

I have never been an optimist, I consider myself "a realist", being an optimist can be dangerous you under estimate some risks.

A realist seems good enough for me. Either that or I try to be an optimist. It's so difficult to do so though.

@Jenaisle I try to "think positive" that has nothing to do with being an optimist.

I have those days too, and they tend to drag me down. When I'm feeling cynical or pessimistic, I try to write down my thoughts in my journal. It's just to purge my mind and to help me process things. My life coach and counselor has been a great help in correcting my "thinking errors." She is 60 years old and has been through so much in life. She would remind me every now and then to try something new/revive an old hobby so I could have something to look forward to. What did you realize after you've proved that your negative thoughts were unfounded?

Those are great ways to do, Macy. I'm glad you succeeded in doing them. I do write sometimes, but come to think of it, I haven't written for quite some time now, except here on MyLot. I realized that I was punishing myself by thinking such negative thoughts. So, I try to dismiss the negative thoughts when they come. But as I have said. I find it tough to do that nowadays. Thanks for your valuable thoughts. Have a wonderful afternoon.

I've never been a pessimist. I always thought it would be very hard to be one, I absolutely have to have positivity in my life for my own survival. I don't mean that I am a Susie Sunshine all the time. I just try to see the good side of things rather than the bad. Have you ever wondered just why you are here? Why are you alive? I realize we all believe differently and walk different religious paths; I respect that and try to never push what I do believe on others...but...maybe you are meant to be here? Maybe your life's job isn't done yet? Maybe you are supposed to be here to make a difference in someone's life? Sometimes, we have to feed our spirit good food, or it doesn't produce good feelings. You are such a kind lady. You are one of the ones here I wish I could meet in person. And if you ever think you do need some type of counseling, go for it, even for just a bit, if you think it would help you. It's been said by experts that over 90% of the entire world population has needed some type of counselling at some point in their lives. There is absolutely no shame in reaching out for someone to talk to, or to help you a bit. Or you can just drop by mylot, and mingle with all of us silly people! Fight to retain your fighting spirit. It's worth saving. And although I say it all the time and truly follow it, never, EVER, give up. Ever.

Why did this comment make my eyes watery? . It's like a sermon on the mount. "Fight to retain your fighting spirit. It's worth saving." I will remember that. Yes, I don't have someone to talk to here, and I'm happy you could be here on MyLot to listen to my shenanigans. . My MyLot friends are the best there are. Your questions about my purpose here, such as, Maybe you are supposed to be here to make a difference in someone's life? made me think. Yes, we all have our purposes in life. Thank you for reminding me. As usual, I feel good just talking to you. Thank you again, Marie. Take care and God bless.

@Jenaisle Umm...my eyes watered, as well. And I don't think it was from the smoke the wildfires are sending to us here. I always enjoy tallking to you, Jenaisle. I love the way you discuss real feelings, and question happenings and ways to cope with them. I can't help but be sad that you don't have anyone to talk to where you are, I am so glad you come here to talk to us, and make us feel so special. You make a difference here. We are all very blessed to know you. Be proud of who you are, a loving and special being with a purpose. Sending you hugs, good vibes, and blessings.

I think it is quite normal for us to have up and down time. I think there is plenty of sunshine in Phillippines and this is already good enough for you to have a bright day Just have some relaxations to the beach and your worries may be gone

I am sometimes optimistic about something. When I am down, I look sad most of the time. It's hard to get back to being optimistic. It takes time.

Some wise philosophers and psychologists (Socrates, Carl Jung, etc.) speak of balance. I suppose I am a realist, with a slight leaning toward optimism. I believe almost everyone has a "good side." It's only a matter of finding that good side. I am still learning to take a stand when people do bad things toward me.

Anna mentioned being a realist too. I like that you're a realist too and also believe that there is good in everyone else. I hope you could maintain your attitude and develop it more. I'm trying to adapt that way of thinking. Thanks for your reply. Have a great week.

I can't remember the last time I was down; and I certainly have enough reasons to be sad. I used to be an optimist, then a pessimist....now I'm a realist. I don't look for the worst in every situation. I hope you find a happy balance in your life.

I listen to music when I'm in a down mood. A definite pick me upper and a way to escape. These days I do worry about the state of the world and my country in particular. Endless wars, bitter feuding about political views, crime, violence, race relations, woke ideology gone crazy are enough to give you the feeling this world is going in the wrong direction.
